Hotel in Lugano for tomorrow 8/16

Hi All,

This is a re-post. I am not sure where the original went....

Need accomodations in Lugano for Sat 8/16. Prefer cozy and comfortable to formal. Good breakfast a must.

Please provide any ideas. We are in SW right now, and making last minute itinerary changes....

Thanks!
B

Thanks Iris for the prompt response! Have you stayed at any of these locations?

So far, our trip is going spendidly, due to our following various recommendations by fellow fodorites.

For that reason alone, we are hoping to get a few specific recommendations.
Since we are such short notice, and it will be a weekend, we may be extremely limited....

Hello beachtee

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Walter au Lac.

http://www.walteraulac.ch/cms/

Our room (basic, but well-equipped), but the view of the lake - terrific!)

Breakfast was in a large room with huge windows, lake view.

There is a street which separates the hotel from the lake. Busy during the day but at night it was very quiet.

Happy travels!

What's your budget? Are you arriving by train or will you need parking for a car?

The Albergo Pestalozzi is a nice little budget hotel (not that anything in Lugano is dirt cheap). Some of the rooms have wonderful views of the lake but may get some street noise at night...there is a disco nearby. The noise never bothered me.

The back rooms are very quiet but don't have views.

Good breakfasts at the Pestalozzi, but I thought dinner there was sub-par. I had much nicer meals at the Movenpick restaurant in the city park near the hotel (good salad bar).

Our other rec would be the Delfino Hotel. Nice rooms (modern) with balconies overlooking the lake. Good breakfast; also there's a swimming pool, a nice feature for hot days. They do offer parking, but space are limited and it can be a tight squeeze.

If you can't find anything you like in Lugano itself, don't forget the other lakeside villages/towns like Morcote and Gandria (both picturesque but also touristy) and the more suburban communities like Caslano (very pleasant, less touristy, but also not as picturesque). Several hotels in Caslano has private beaches on the lake. From Caslano, you can actually walk to Italy over the Ponte Tresa bridge.

Hi beachtee; I havn't been to Lugano, but I know that booking.com is reliable. If you do select a hotel from this company, they do rate the hotel. But you should also check tripadvisor.com/lugano for their comments. Iris

Hello again,

Thank you all! We have checked the hotel site Iris recommended. Will look further into the other choices.

We do have a car. A lakeview is nice, but the most important feature to us is the atmosphere of the facility.

We have been overwhelmingly welcomed by the locals, even despite our obvious language barrier!

We will be driving from Engadine region to Lugano on Sat--probably late afternoon to arrive in Lugano before nightfall.

We will need a meal...as well as those welcoming accommodations.

Keep the responses coming! I am sure we will hit on a winner.

is most convenient to the train station and the town center if you don't mind the steps. Love the breakfast. Stayed there a few times.

Here is the web site for the Delfino:
http://www.delfinolugano.ch/hotelese....cfm?lingua=en

Mostly well reviewed on TA.

I did a quick check to see what's available on www.hotels.de and while neither the Pestalozzi nor the Delfino were listed, it did show availability at the highly rated (by both TA and Fodorites) Hotel Dante, but doubles started at 315 Sfr per night. Also shown as available is the Best Western Hotel Bellevue au Lac, which also has good reviews and has a swimming pool.

Away from Lugano (town) but still on the lake is Caslan's well regarded Albergo Gardenia for 240 Sfr per night. Parking, restaurant, etc.

DH's aunt and uncle used to live in Caslano, so we are rather fond of the town.

I suppose I might mention that the hotel does not need to be in Lugano. We will be visiting the lake, so any accommodations near there are suitable.

Currently, we are at Chesa Randolina in Sils-Maria (Thanks to Ingo!). It is very comfortable, the food is superb, and there is a friendly, not stuffy, atmosphere.

However, it is rainy and 40+ degrees. Brrrrr. That is why we are able to spend time trying to locate a hotel for tomorrow! Otherwise, we'd be riding lifts, and hiking mountains!

The Hotel Federale is one of our favorite hotels we've ever stayed at. Get a high floor for an amazing view. We felt the price was very good for the quality.

Hello Beachtree:

Since you are interested in personal experience, I can speak for the Hotel Splendide Royal:

http://www.splendide.ch/

This is a 5 star property on Ria Caccia, a quarter mile from Lugano central and right on the Lake. The views are incredible and the dining room, especially dishes prepared tableside, is wonderful. If I had one day in Lugano, I would spend it here. Gradyghost.

Today's a public holiday in many cantons in Switzerland. Because of the extremely miserable weather, many people have opted to head for Tessin for some friendlier weather.

Call the tourist office in Lugano tomorrow morning for recommendations.

By the way, Hotel Dante is a wonderful hotel with a breakfast to die for.

And another vote for Hotel Dante. The room was delightful overlooking a charming piazza and the breakfast was beyond belief. I'm not sure if opulence or decadence better describe it!

While I had the Hotel Lugano Dante website up I decided to "flip" through the pages just to remember our lovely stay. If you check out the breakfast page, I can assure you that the items they depict were all there during our stay in August a couple of years ago. If you have a better breakfast anyplace during your trip, I'll be amazed - any my husband will want the name of the place!
