Hotel in Krakow & Poznan
I posted my message by mistake on the general Europe board-so am trying again. ANy suggestions for great hotels in Krakow amd Poznan? We like to stay in classic hotel reminiscent of the area as opposed to stark modern. Thanks in advance. Jan

Hotel Copernicus probably the best in Krakow. - older building off the main square - large suite type rooms - somewhat cold.
Theres a hotel right on the square called the Wentzl - the sweetest place - very popular so book early...website:

Krakow..Maybe The Grand? Or the Saski..There are many new hotels in all large Polish cities. Usually there are a few old grand ones. Use your guide books to get details. Major hotels will also have web sites with detailed information about them.

In Krakow, I'd recommend Hotel Eden in Kazimiriecz (sp?). It is located in the old Jewish quarter, within a 20-25-minute walk of the train station (also easily accessible by tram). Historical building with character but fully renovated inside. Very pleasant staff and great rates: I reserved a single for $50 but actually got a double when they ran out of single rooms.

You may have already made arrangements for accommodation in Krakow but I just returned from there two weeks ago. Stayed at Hotel Saski which was very good and right by the Market Square. Ask for a "quiet" room as some are across the road from a night club which seems to go all night.
Excellent restaurants - Leonardos and Wierzynek.
Have fun - we certainly did and want to return.

The site http://www.inyourpocket.com has good annotated hotel lists for both cities. Prices in Poznan are about half those in west Europe, but in Krakow are only a little below western. In Krakow I like the Pollera and the Fortuna Bis, both centrally placed, both slightly old-style. In Poznan I like the Dom Turysty, just beside the central square among the old merchant family houses. In both cities In Your Pocket lusts these as mid range, which means about 35 euros a night dingle. Their lists also have sections for budget hotels. The great thing in Poznan is to get away from the area around the station, in heavy grey Prussian style.
I think the palaces and even Kazimierz are far from the city centres, the most handsome parts of each city.
