Are you interested in trying Priceline? We stayed at the Marriot in Leidspline for $70 usd a night!! A major steal, and it was very nice. Not "Dutch", by any means, and did not include breakfast, but for a 4 star- we were thrilled. It was a great location.

www.bookings.nl and www.amsterdam.info are good sites for checking out hotels and rates, even if you don't book with them. On both sites, you can choose hotels in a particular area of the city (in this case Leidseplein). Then check them out on TripAdvisor to see what people are saying about them. The one time I stayed in the Leidseplein area, it was because we got stranded in A'dam because of a missed connection, and the only hotel in town with a room was the Hotel King which had no in-room bathrooms. (A decent place otherwise).

I wouldn't call it a great hotel, but we've stayed at Hotel Hestia behind the Marriott, across 1 canal from Leidseplein... It is plain but functional, with typical Dutch hotel breakfast (do-it-yourself toast, cereal, cheeses, fruit cup, etc)...

Of course, there is the Marriott but it is most likely more than $150... behind it also stands Hotel Leidse Square (used to be BW / Ramada) which might squeek under your limit...

In the same niche is the Owl Hotel, again, nothing fancy but serviceable:

I was satisfied with Hotel Kap, in that general area, in your price range, but I wouldn't call it "great". But serviceable, adequate, good location, and very nice breakfast in a sweet little dining room included.
