Hotel Goldener Hirsch in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber
Has anyone ever stayed here or know where it's located? Specifically, I would like to know how far it is from the hotel to "green"...which I assume is outside the city. My family would like to run while on vacation so I'm trying to find hotels that make that easy. Is the hotel near the city gate? Is the terrain outside the gate runnable?

If you look on the hotel's web site you will notice that it actually abutts the ramparts (with views of the countryside below) and just down the street is one of the gates that exits out into the countryside. It is about a 10 minute walk down the cobblestoned street to exit that gate-I wouldn't recommend jogging there because of the uneven surface.
Once you exit the gate, the paved road is there as well as a surfaced bike/pedestrian path that zig-zags around the rampart base. I will check my photos, but I am almost certain this is asphalt and would be ok for running. It is for all practical purposes green countryside. If you run more than a short jog, you actually might come to the roman bridge I keep thinking I'll visit and never have the time get to.
I have never stayed personally at this hotel, but have passed it numerous times; it is beautifully kept and the view/location is suberb; if it were in my budget, I would not hesitate to stay there.

Hi; We have stayed there and enjoyed the hotel and staff. Had dinner there one night, but don't remember the meal. Streets are one way. Try to get a map of the city with the hotel location. We came thru the wrong gate with 'wall to wall' people. A postman helped get us to our hotel. Richard

Been there 2 weeks ago, room was o.k. Floor boards make noise, breakfast is o.k, but far from extraordinary. Good for the money, receptionist spoke only English and little German.
A gate is close as is the central square. Felt like a US motel, but anyway. German, Chinese TV and CNN available.

Back in 2006 my family stayed at this place:
http://www.butz.kreiselmeier.de/
It's right in the center of town with ample parking in front. It isn't plush or top quality, but like all German accomodations it is very clean and offers a sumptuous breakfast. They have a big room three floors up (no elevator) with 4 beds. The price is exceptional for such a touristy spot.
I'm not a runner myself, but I know if you get up early there is nobody on the streets. A run through the walled town would be pretty interesting.
Don't forget to take the Nightwatchman Tour which leaves just a block away from this hotel. The English tour is at 8:00. The kids will love it. http://tinyurl.com/ygzhooj
