Hotel for one night in/near Bordeaux in mid-September

We will be spending a week with friends in a gite near Sarlat - after that we need to return to Bordeaux to drop off our rental car before taking the train south to Bayonne. (DH then proceeds to northern Spain where he is hiking 200 km of the Camino.) Our friends will be flying out of Bordeaux (via Paris) back to US.

Looking for nice hotel in/near Bordeaux - do we stay outside town? near airport (for car drop off and friend's flight home)? near train station (bidding friends farewell beforehand and getting early start on train trip)? I gather area near train station not ideal for strolling around town, so perhaps better to stay centrally and take taxi to Gare St. Jean?

Any suggestions appreciated!
