Hotel Emonec (Ljubljana) and currency
I'm considering a weekend trip to Ljubljana and have booked for right now Emonec. the location seems good; I'm a bit worried about some negative comments about the bathrooms. Can I comment on this hotel or another where they stayed in Ljublajan? I'd like a single, private room for under 60 Euros.
I'm wondering about currency. They have quoted me in Euros, but I know Slovenia has their own currency for now. I'd pay with credit card, but I've heard they've had some problems with American Visas. If I needed to pay in cash, could I get Euros in Slovenia from an ATM ... I'd think not, at least at this point. I'd be going in November.
Thanks.

Slovenia switches to 'physical' euros starting January 1st, 2007, but the accounting currency is already euros, as it was in the rest of the eurozone 3 years before the coins and banknotes arrived. The local currency is now merely a different way of expressing amounts that are now set in euros.

Please don't worry about the currency issues. You will get tolars from the ATM but it isn't any big deal and it is less expensive to pay in tolars. Also, your Visa should be just fine. If Visa is an issue, MasterCard will be accepted. Sometimes, Visa in general is not accepted, but being an American Visa has nothing to do with it.

I was just in Ljubljana and Euros are accepted everywhere....although you may not be getting the best rate. I stopped by the hotel Emonec. It is in a great location and looked fine to me but I can't tell you about the bathrooms.

Thanks very much for the help. I guess my question is more about ATMS ... when I withdraw from an ATM, will I get tolars or Euros, or can I choose? I'm just wondering b/c the hotel is quoting in Euros, and I don't have any. I would probably pay with credit card, unless for some reason it doesn't work in their machine. I only have Visa. Maybe I'll e-mail them to ask.

I stayed at the Emonec a week ago on Friday and Saturday nights. As others have said it's the perfect location and you can't beat the price. I got a large double room for single use and a free reserved parking place. I thought the nearby club noise mentioned elsewhere would be a problem, but it really wasn't...and I'm sensitive to noise.
The bathroom was clean and perfectly adequate. The lack of shower curtain is pretty common in this level hotel, and it wasn't a problem either. I just used the towels provided. They worked for me.
If you're driving, it's a bit tricky to find since the hotel is off a car yard that you enter off Wolfova. It's hard to see the hotel buildings from the street...and it's a short pedestrian street that's used by cabs and buses. Let me know if you're driving and I can be more specific.
I paid with Visa and had no problem. The hotel and breakfast are pretty basic, but for the price and location, I can't imagine doing any better. Just make sure you arrive before

As per Jeff's comment about arrival time, we arrived at 6:30 pm &, even though they had my credit card # on hand, they cancelled my reservation for that night & gave the room away to a drop-in.Needless to say we were tired from the long day's journey & insisted that they put us up elsewhere for the night. Not only did we request that they pay for our cab to & from the room they sent us to,but we insisted that we be served breakfast the following morning at Emonec. In general, of the 11 places we reserved on our trip, we found the family pensions to be far more friendly & comfortable than the hotels.

In fairness to the hotel, they did specifically ask that I call them if I were to arrive after 5. But I thought that since they too had my cc number, it shouldn't matter. The women who checked me in was however nice and friendly. She seemed to understand my frustration in finding the hotel...and at that point, trying to find and use a phone would have just added to my frustration.
And BTW Syl, I did have a room waiting for me at the Max in Piran. (When I reconfirmed by email two weeks before, he said he didn't have a reservation me. But when I sent him a copy of my original confirmation, he apologized and said he had overlooked my reservation.) It was tricky to find also. Max was friendly and a bit quirky, but OK if he wouldn't smoke so much.

Thanks so much for telling me this. I'm supposed to land at 4:35 pm, so of course by the time I get my luggage and get to the hotel, it will definitely be past 5 pm. I've told them about this via an e-mail, and I hope that helps them keep my room!

Jeff,
I was wondering about Max Piran.I saw it way up the stairs as we climbed up to the top.How did you get your luggage there? I'll be posting a trip report soon which will include comments about all 11 places we stayed.

Syl - I just rolled my carry-on over the very rough cobbled street from the parking lot at the top of the hill...the opposite direction from the church. It's quite a hike up and it may have been easier to use the lot by the water and take the bus to the main square. The room itself was quite nice and spotless. He didn't give me the largest room since I was by myself. But, it was large enough and had a real queen/double bed and modern bath.
