Hotel Danielli Venice- is it amazing or terrible

I stayed at the Hotel Danielli 30 years ago with my parents, and remember it as one of the most incredible experiences. i am now travelling with my husband and 3 teenagers to Venice in July, they are all new to Venice. I have booked a hotel that looks lovely, but part of me keeps straying back to wanting to blow the budget and treat everyone and stay at The Danielli. Trouble is there are so many confusing reports, esp on TA. People either love it or say it was horrible. The bad reports seem to stem from room service which we never use, i want to know if the rooms are still incredibe and the magic still there....or am i dressing up my memories.....any advice appreciated

Be aware that the Danieli has an annex, so your room might not be in the part you remember. My parents always stayed there, but I prefer a quieter part of Venice like Dorsoduro.

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/luxury..._PROP_OVERVIEW

Danieli interiors are awsome featured recently in the

Depp/Jolie movie "The Tourist" have stayed there personally.

Down side for me it is right at the peak tourist area in the

lagoon always chock a block there are better cheaper luxury

alternatives overlooking the Grand Canal.

Last May got a Grand Canal Suite spg.com Westin Europa Regina

was awesome 4500 starwood points plus $70/nt

My wife and I got their Amex Card enough points for a stay.

This year on our Delta Skymile we got a 1000 euro/nt

Canal View Suite at the Bauervenezia.com(40000 FF miles/nt)

Very romantic included an AWESOME 50 euro Breakfast

right on the Grand Canal.

Amazingly FAR less crowded there 1 block off of

San Marco on the Canal sort of an upscale enclave.

So might check those out.

Otel.com good prices for me if you are paying cash

plus 5% cashback plus 105 DC through Facebook currently.

Used to be a DE for TA have gone WAY downhill since

expedia bought them and are fixing to try to spin them off

for money...now pretty much a paid/censored commercial

travel site lots of reviews faked or posted by the clueless.

booking.com for me best most honest

hotel reviews rankings currently.

Happy Hunting!

Try:

Pensione Wildner which is a few doors down. Request rooms with a view. Same view as Danieli for a quarter of the tab. Not the same level of service of course.

Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo which is a five minute walk to the Rialto market. Fantastic hotel with large beautiful rooms. Not the same level of service either. Still a very nice hotel. Pretty courtyard for breakfast dining.

Pensione Accademia VIlla Marvege. Very nice hotel in the Dorsoduro.

We were on a tour and happened to be assigned a room with a balcony and good canal view, so we were thrilled. However, it was the balcony and view that made the room spectacular. The room itself was fine but not particularly large or special.

The restaurant where breakfast is served also has a fantastic view of the canal.

The prices for drinks and food at the bars and restaurants are very high.

We really liked the location in the center of things.

We did think that there were front desk issues. It's such a small space that there isn't room for enough staff, so there were sometimes long lines for checking in or out or trying to get change.

Overall, we loved our stay, but I doubt if I would spend that much if I were paying for it directly out of pocket rather than as part of a tour.
