Having now decided on where to stay in Italy and how long in each place we are trying to work out accommodation.
As we are staying in Venice for 6 nights in April/May we thought maybe an apartment would be a better option than a hotel or B & B. If anyone has any recommendations that would be really helpful.
We are then spending 4 nights in Florence, 4 nights in Rome and finally 4 nights in Sorrento and flying back to the UK from Naples.
Would it be better to stay in hotels in these places for 4 nights or apartments. Again any suggestions of places to stay would be great.
Our budget is up to 175 euros a night and there will be 3 in our party, my husband, myself and my 16 year old daughter. We are not looking for luxury just a clean, comfortable base.
Hotel, B&B or apartment?

6 nights should certainly be cheaper than a hotel, or a 'luxury B&B', as long as you don't go for something really palatial - especially with 3 of you. For E175pn you can certainly do better than just 'clean & comfortable'!
We found Truly Venice very good to deal with and more reasonably priced than many agencies, for our last holiday in Venice last year (before actually moving here this year!). We stayed in their 'Orseolo' apartment which was lovely, has a private courtyard and is right in the middle of my favourite area, but it only has 1 bedroom.
After moving here and while waiting to move into a long-term apartment, we spent 10 nights in an apartment called 'Cozy San Basilio' which I found on TripAdvisor (www.flipkey.com/venice-condo-rentals/p364184/). It's also very nice, has a separate room which can be used as a 2nd bedroom (double sofabed) & also has a loft area with another double mattress; plus the (American) owner was delightful & went out of her way to be helpful. The only disadvantage for us is it has no outside sitting space.
I just found airbnb.com and was truly impressed with quality and prices.
We always go with apts especially for the washer/dryer aspect as well as the kitchen. It's not so much for cooking but much easier for breakfast and then getting going for the day. A hitch: you have to coordinate the time of arrival with the owner or manager but it has always worked out for us.
Hi Springer - welcome.
I would definitely go with an apartment in Rome; in the other places the benefits and savings will be fewer as any groceries you buy will be difficult to use up before you move on. however if you treat an apartment more like a B&B, the very least you could hope for is to have more room for the same price, as well as washing facilities etc.
actually we once rented an apartment in Rome for a week and never cooked there at all! we even ate breakfast out most days. at the time it was less than €175/night and for us and our then 18 year old son it was ideal. we rented it in the winter and found it fine, but other fodorites were there in summer and found it dark [the bedrooms are in the basement]. the living room is on the ground floor and we found it very light. it is also very central, being near the piazza navona and via coronari.
it can be found here: lacasadiclelia.webs.com

ooops - i meant Venice [where you have 6 days] obviously.
my recommended apartment IS in Rome, though.
sorry for the confusion.
We rented the "Flora" apartment from the Vacations by Owner site (forget the acronym) in Florence. Reasonably priced and incredibly central (you can look out your 5th floor window and see the Duomo at eye level). Two bedrooms, one bath, kitchen/living room. You do need to be willing to go up almost 90 steps to reach it, though!!
