Hotel advice Barcelona/Granada/Madrid

The bf and I are planning on an 8 day trip to Spain before he heads to Paris to teach for 2 weeks.

I've never been and am really looking forward to it (much more than I am for the 4 days I'll be in Paris, but that's another thread :-).

Anyway, looking for some advice for places to stay in Barcelona and Granada and maybe Madrid (for a day).

I gather staying at the Alhambra Palace is a top suggestion, although waiting for the bf to help me backout our travels is pushing me back on contacting them for a reservation. Any other thoughts?

Also, we'll have a car so will need parking which might be a problem so may need to stay in more out of the way areas or larger hotels (I'd really prefer out of the way areas in charming hotels than in large impersonal places).

He is an architect and is much interested in Puerta America. Anyone stay there? Any feedback?

Any suggestions on accomodations much appreciated (and any other suggestions much appreciated too but I'll be ironing out details in a few months so don't feel compelled now!)
