Honeymoon to Italy

Hey everyone,

I'm getting married in August and would like to plan a 9 night honeymoon to Italy in early September, my budget is about $4000 for the hotel and expenses. Do you think that is possible? And can you give me some advice on where to stay?

August is an extremely hot month in Italy, and it is hotter in the center and in the south than in the northern mountains or along the northern coasts. Some of the coolest places to be in August are the Dolomiti mountains, the northern lakes, the Italian Riviera and much of Sardinia.
(The Adriatic coast that includes Venice is often very hot and humid.)

If heat doesn't bother you all that much, then there are lovely honeymoon-type destinations in the wine country of Tuscany, and the cliffsides of the Amalfi Coast or the island of Capri.

HOWEVER, August is the most crowded vacation month all over Italy, and many beautiful destinations are absolutely overrun with tourists and vacationers, to the point where no space on a beach can be found and you must wait in line for nearly everything (buses, ferries, pizza).

If you really don't like crowds, it is still possible in Italy to find beautiful places to stay, with beautiful views, that simply aren't so famous as places like Capri or Portofino or Cortina d"ampezzo or Bellagio. You can nearby these places and visit them.

If you have an idea that you would prefer a lake to a seacoast or vice versa, or a vinyard with a swimming pool instead of an island, or a quiet place or a famous place with dancing at night, then say so and people can make some suggestions.

Oooops -- sorry! I read too fast and now see you are going in early September.

The very worst of the crowds will have died down, especially if you go when chidlren are already back in school. It can still be very hot in Italy, and it is still a very popular tourist season at the most popular destinations.

Thank you for your reply.

Actually we are now open to any suggestions about honeymoon destinations.

Italy was our first choice but any other good suggestions would be nice, since we really don't enjoy the heat or crowd much.

How about some other place in Europe or maybe Asia?

Thanks in advance

I would choose Italy over any other country for a honeymoon. It has the perfect mix of climate, cuisine, culture and scenery.

Try not to spend all your time in the cities: sure Rome, Venice and Florence are all beautiful but make sure to mix it up with time in the country. The beaches will all still be popular in early September but not as crowded as in August.

My suggestions:

Fly into Venice (the absolutely perfect honeymoon spot, IMO). and fly out of Rome, spend some time between the two (Tuscany or Umbria).

You should be able to plan a wonderful trip for $4000.

Italy is year round tourist destination which meant there are no truly low season there. Do a little search online about place to stay in each cities you planned to visit and look at the hotels rate during September would helpful. If you are talking about cost, actually it would vary depend on several factors. Location, class of hotels, occupation, etc will involve. I previously stayed in Rome for 4 days and get a decent studio room for about $150 a night. So in my opinion $4000 for hotels and expense is enough for you. However, think about emergency money, transportation cost, etc.

You have tagged your thread "Italy" so most of the responses you will get will be from people who are Italy fans, some of whom never travel to other places. I like Italy too (I live here) but if you don't like heat and crowds, then you won't like being in Italy in early September, and Venice and Rome are particularly hot and crowded.

Even Paris is cooler in September. You could combine it with a visit to Belgium. San Sebastian Spain and the Basque Coast is a beautiful destination. You could take a driving tour of France.

If you come to Italy, think of the northern mountains and lakes and look for ways to avoid the crowds by staying in less famous places (they are beautiful) .
