My wife and I visited Santorini last June. The weather was wonderful. We stayed in a small village of Imperovigli at a small Villa Tholos hotel. We had wonderful time. I strongly recommend staying in Imperovigli. It is less crowded that Fira and Oia and a very quiet and romantic place. Sunsets there are fantastic especially from the rock protruding into the sea. Blue Note restaurant in Imperovigli is a nice and informal spot with good food. A great place to stay is Honeymoon Villas but you have to ask for cave houses and they are expensive although I hear well worth the price. Beaches are not that great on Santorini. We liked Monolithos near the airport the best , although it is close to several factories. There are several good simple fish tavernas across the beach from Monolithos. Also, while on Santorini, visit wineries and the archeological digs at Acrotiri.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.

Santorini is magical and very romantic. I concur with the previous poster's recommendation of Imerovigli. The caldera side of the island is so dramatic, and the beaches can be easily reached if you feel like some time on the black sand. The Minoans were a remarkable people, and Akrotiri will amaze you. When we were there a few years ago, we went to a small taverna near the site called "The Cave," because it was a cave right in the seaside rocks. Even though highly developed for tourism, you will see locals arriving by jet from Athens and riding a donkey home from the airport! The people are charming and helpful - I'll never forget my visit there. Be sure to take the boat trip over to Nea Kameni, the current active volcano. There are wonderful views of the caldera from there, and you may go back up to Fira by donkey or funicular. Enjoy!

We too stayed in Imerovigli and recommend over Fira. Oia is beautiful but is not walking distance from anything. Santorini is spectacular and great fun. However, Greece does not have the same standards of luxury as the U.S.. We stayed at a very funky (and expensive) hotel called Chromata which is definately worth checking out. Be sure to choose a hotel with a pool as the beaches aren't great. Also you may want consider a second island (such as Crete or Mykonos) as four or five days is more than enough on Santorini. In Imerovigli, Skaros Tavern is a very good restaurant with a spec. view as long as you don't mind cats. Have fun!! P.S. Weather should be fanatastic in June.

We went in July '97 and found 10 days a bit too long. Definitely need at least 1 night in Fira but watch out for hotels with 120 steps down the side of the mountain. The Atlantis is on top of the hill and is quite decent altho pricey ( US150 - $200 ). We spent most of our time at Kamari which has decent beaches, is central and has a lot of decent hotels with pools ( we stayed at Roussos beach hotel which was great. Ask for the room right at the front, top floor, closest too the pool ( the #1 room in all of KAmari. ) Absolute must are the ruins/red beach/trip and the bay at the bottom of the hill below fira. dont be lazy walk around the corner to see the little island.
