Stayed at Atlantic Villas on the northern part of island about two years ago. Pricey but very, very beautiful. There is a good website out there that tells you the good and bad points of many of the islands. I'll see if I can find it and get back to you.
Congratulations & have a great time.

Since you're going for 10 days, consider chartering a sail boat (and skipper). It's cheaper than you think and a fabulous experience.... a great way to see several islands. www.gpsc.com. Also, Matt Barrett does a great write up on his website mentioned in the previous post.

Santorini is far and away the most beautiful place I've ever been to. My wife and I went there for our honeymoon 4 years ago, and plan on going back every 5 to 10 years!
As for where to stay, it depends on 1) how much money you're willing to spend, 2) What you want to do--ie a)lounge around and read books, vs. b) walk around town and go shopping at the many quaint shops, vs. c) disco stuff.
If you want b or c, stay in Fira, or possibly Oia. If you want a, then hang out in Firostefani or Imerovigli as both cities are on the highest point of the caldera, about a mile or so out of Fira.
We stayed at Aigialos villas in Fira. It was absolutely perfect. The views from our room of the caldera were absolutely stunning. We had breakfast on the balcony every morning, and then hung out in town (about 100-200 yards away). Marble bathrooms, etc, but small pool without much of a view though.
Oia is my other favorite place. Try the Katikes or the Perivolas. All three properties are deluxe, but well worth the spluge. The Atlantis is also nice, but a little older, with slightly less charm (as it is a hotel as opposed to "villas"). By the way, Aigialos is just around the corner from Atlantis.

We also visited Mykonos for a day. Very charming, lots of restaurants, and tons of clubs, as well beaches. If this is your idea of fun, then Mykonos is the place to be.

Have fun!

Paul

thanks for the suggestions. for those that stayed in oia - how far away is it from the city area and is it walkable? also, those that went to mykonos - did you enjoy it? we are going in mid June so hopefully it won't be too crowded. thanks again.

If you can afford it, stay at Katikes in the town of Oia in Santorini. Spectacular views. Extraordinary service. Amazing pool. Everyone walks to the end of town for the sunsets. Good restaurants and shopping. But this is the small town. You'll want to rent a car to visit the main town of Fira and drive around the island.

Hydra!! I loved it soo much. I went there on my honeymoon last year and it was fabulous. Perfect antidote to all wedding planning. Very different than Mykonos and Santorini which we went too(we loved seeing different islands and styles). We were there in early June. No cars or scooters on island. Tourists during the day, but all leave by mid-afternoon. We'd walk 5 minutes from our hotel (Bratsera - awesome!) and never see anyone at all. Plenty of little fishing viliage with restaurants without any menus. They take you into the kitchen for you to choose your meals. No beaches - but lovely (cold) swimming off the rocks and into caves. There's also nightlife - where you can party with real Greeks. Can't talk enough about my favorite place. Feel free to write me if you have any questions. -Melanie Good luck!
