Hiring a car in Croatia

I think I need a car in Hvar because the villa is quite isolated. There is a car hire firm on the island, but I'm wondering whether it's going to be better to rent from a recognised firm and bring it over on the ferry, even if it costs more. What do people think?
We're going in October so rates are still quite cheap this far in advance. The ferry both ways is about £52 or so, but a rogue car hire firm might cost me more than that?
