Hello!
I am hesitating between Hinterglemm and Berchtesgaden as a home base to explore the area before moving on to Vienna. I do prefer the hotel in Hinterglemm however.
Our plan is to to some mountain trekking if the weather permits (we are going in September), visit Salzburg for a day, and enjoy the spa facilities at the hotel.
Are both areas pretty much equivalent in terms of convenience for driving around to interesting places for a few hours each day and cycling/trekking? Restaurants in the vicinity will not be an issue since both hotels have good restaurants.
Merci!
Hinterglemm or Berchtesgaden as a base for 4 days?

Hinterglemm - which I admit I had to look up, is much more isolated than Berchtesgaden. There is one road in and out, for goodness sake. Kitzbuhel, which looks ot be about 20km away is 1:15 away because you have to drive away from it to the east, then away south, before heading back west and north.
Berchtesgaden is 1:30 away and Salzburg is about the same.
If you want an isolated valley to hike in for a few days Hinterglemm looks like a good spot. To be honest, I haven't heard of any place that is reachable from Hinterglemm in less than 90 minutes, except Zell am See.
Aramis sums it up perfectly.
Keep in mind that it DOES rain in the Alps once in a while; in Hinterrmm you are stuck. The valley is the perfect place for winterspport, but in the summer? I'd rather stay at place where I have some options, without having to drive a long way. There are several nice hotels in B'gdn.
If you are looking for a spa, check out Bad Reichenhall, within train and about 25 minutes drive from B'gdn, but also with a wide range of spas as well as some mountains.
Hmmmm... That is a good point...

I have to admit that I am ALMOST wishing for rain though after I've seen the photos of the spa facilities at the hotel in Hinterglemm... http://www.hotel-theresia.com
Except for our 1st night in Munich, this is the very beginning of our 25-day trip, and relaxation is the key...
I guess we could do onr day to Salzburg/Berchtesgaden, a few hours in Zell am See, and the rest at the hotel, either trekking or relaxing in the hot tub!
