Hilton Hotels in Vienna/Getting to Zagreb, Croatia
We are trying to squeeze in a couple of days in Vienna on our way to a family reunion in Croatia this September. We will arrive in Vienna on Sunday afternoon and have to be in Zagreb, Croatia in Wednesday, so our time is veyr limited. I have several questions for those who are familiar with Vienna:
1. We want to use Hitlon points for our hotel. There are 3 Hiltons in Vienna. The Hilton Plaza, the Hilton Vienna and the Hilton Danube. I gather that the Hilton Plaza has the best location, but what about the other two. Are they reasonably close to the City Centre?
2. We want to take the train from Vienna to Zagreb. Any idea on the schedule and lenght of trip?
Thanks so much!

The Hilton Danube , as the name states is on the Danube River. This is out of the city center and requires transport ( not walking distance ) to major sightseeing.
recently the UBahn line # U-2 has been extended to a relatively close location to the hotel. But still takes time to the center and sightseeing. Little in the area of this hotel for a tourist, limited dining confined to the hotel , no shopping.
Hilton plaza is in city center. It is located on the Ringstrasse, the major boulevard of Vienna. easy walking distance to much sightseeing. Good choice of restaurants nearby. very close to various public transport options - bus, streetcars and UBahn.
While the Hilton Vienna has a ok location just outside the Ring and overlooking the StadtPark,it takes more walking or transport to most important sights. It is more convenient to airport transport.
However, the area very near to one side of the hotel is now one big construction site. It mst have some effect on rooms facing that direction.
I would choose the Hilton plaza.
for train transport
investigate the Austrian Railroad website
www.oebb.at
It will provide time ans schedules.

We sat at the Plaza on HH points several years ago. From my trip report:
Accommodations: A suite. On the business floor - the 7th. Very nice king-bedded room. Very nice 'American-style' room. Comfortable couch & chairs. Bathrobes & slippers. Opulent bathroom with bidet, shower stall & bathtub. The usual TV x 2 with channels from throughout Europe - (including my trusty BBC Europe), Safe, mini-bar, ice from room service, in-house restaurant, concierge. Very nice. The staff were excellent.
Located on the 'ring' - tram stop Bõrse - just across the road. Subway link at the side of the hotel. Parking 27€ per day - ouch. But the check-in staff told us to park on the road until Monday morning for free & we did. And they also told us the ticket was only 21€ but I moved the car in at 8 AM & we paid 36€ for parking until Tuesday morning.
The Negatives: I can't really think of any. Okay, here's one - not many restaurants nearby.

Do not agree about not many restaurants nearby
walk out the hotel door turn left 3 minutes on the Ringstrasse to the Stock Exchange building - the Hansen resturant-
This s also good for breakfast. You will see many businessmen here for morning meetings and eating .
www.vestibuel.at
turn right when leaving the hotel walk 2 minutes to the big squqre and transport center Schotten- walk across the Ring and walk on Schottengasse 60 meters to Restaurants Leupold and Kupferdachl. Schottengasse 7
tables outside for dining too.
www.leupold.at
Continuing on Scottengasse toward city center and Stephansdom- 3 minutes to freyung square . In Palais Harrach on right side a good italian place Martinelli
www.barbaro.at
fine indoor or out door dining.
Just across the Freyung square and in the courtyard of the Schotten Church a new and large beer garden with food.
Continuing to Bierhof and Hopferl - good austrian specialties-good prices too.
www.bierhof.at
all of the above 5-10 minute maximum walk from the hotel. As you walk , you will pass several wurstl stands - good for a snack and the good aroma makes you very hungry.
All good choices.

We just stayed at the Hilton Vienna June 25-28 with points. The construction was visible from our room but not a problem for us. The Stadtpark is right across the street and is nice but we were there for the rainny season, so didn't get to enjoy it. Very nice stay, and we got upgraded to Executive lounge. The concierge was not very helpful but other than that it was a very good place to stay.We did 2 tours with the Vienna Sightseeing Tours and the guides were both unfriendly and appeared bored with their jobs.
