High driving
Hi everyone,we're going to stay in Amalfi on Monday and we're picking up a hire car from Naples Airport. Is the drive along the Amalfi coast as hair raising as we've heard?

Hi threadbare, when you say a hire car do you mean a car with a driver or a rental car? I am in the US, imagine you are in the UK or Australia perhaps so thus my confusion with the term, I am sorry for my ignorance.
Anyway, the Amalfi coast can be hair raising. I do not like being in a car right next to a cliff. Having said that we had a rental car and my husband drove the Amalfi coast more than once.
I guess I was so enthralled each time with the beauty that I forgot my terror.
If one is going to drive I think it is most important for the driver to be confident about this road as my husband was. I have never regretted doing this.
And from what I have read it appears that the accident rate is very low.
If you go I know you will find it spectacular! Beauty beyond belief!
One thing I did remember is that my husband did not have any wine etc. until after he was through driving for the day.

And watch out for those cordials! As I was driving down from Switzerland through Torino to Monaco nibbling on some really delicious Swiss chocolates, I began to get a little fuzzy. I had blithely overlooked the fact that the liquid centers were 90 proof!

The Amalfi Drive is no big deal if you're a reasonably confident driver. the road is so narrow and twisting that its impossible to get up much speed - and except for the centers of the towns there is a (mostly) fieldstone wall between the road and the precipice.
I'm just curious that you would go to Amalfi at this time of year - lots of things will be either closed or on a minimal schedule since this is the height of the off-season - and not much to do in a beach resort in the chill and (likely) rain.

threadbare, I did not notice that you are leaving this Monday. What NYTraveler said is true. The beauty is there but not the best time to go.
Whatever you do, wherever you go, have a safe and happy trip

Sorry LoveItaly, I did mean a rental car and thanks for your advice. We're going now as it is the only time we can make it together, and crazy though it now seems after reading all the reports of the drive, we are planning to use it as our base. So I guess at the end of the week I'll be over my fear or dead from it. Thanks one and all
