Help with unusual Turkey Itinerary

Jump to last reply

Dear Travelers,

After months of pouring over blogs, web sites, and books, I realized that I still do not know exactly what to do, and I already have the Flight Tickets! (May 12 - May 28)
I decided to ask for help to people who knows and ask for advice

My plan is to get to see Turkey, not only the Greek ruins. Although I have study Art History, I am going to save the Aegean Sea ruins for another Greece trip.
I wonder if you would give me some advice:

May 12-13 Flying from NYC to Istanbul.
Staying 2 nights in Istanbul

May 14: Bosporus Tour, to wean the jet lag.

May 15: Look around Istanbul

May 16: Fly to Antalya. Rent a car and drive to Kas and visit Xanthos-Letoon,
Back to Antalya, through some other route, and see Perge and Aspendos. 4 days.
May 20 Fly into Konya from Antalya.

May 21 Konya Stay one night. I am a Rumi follower and I want to visit The Mevlana's Mausoleum and make a tour to the Catalalhoyuk ruins (one hour from Konya)

May 22; From Konya take a Bus to Cappadocia. probably staying in Urgup 2 nights.
Balloon flight and day tours.

May 24 - Flight to Istanbul

May 25 Istanbul-Tour to Safranbolu and Amasra (Black Sea)
May 26 Istanbul

May 27 Istanbul- Tour to Pergamo

May 28 Leaving to NYC
Do you think this is doable?
I would appreciate any of your comments,
Sincerely
Adriana

    Pedantic Advice and Corrections:

May 14. Do a short bosphorus tour. Long one is a waste of time when you have so little in the city. Get off at yenikoy, take cab to emirgan to visit emirgan park and/or sabanci museum. Board small ring ferry at emirgan pier, get off at Kanlica for special yoghurt next o the pier or at Kandilli for fried horse mackerel again next to the pier, get next boat to Ortakoy, cup of coffee, Ortakoy mosque, taxi to hotel for rest. find "sehir hatlari" website for schedules.

From antalya, take coast road, visit also Kekova (Myra also if you have time)on the way to Kas. Return after Xanthos and Letoon via Kemer and Korkuteli on the mountain route (shorter and faster), possibly visiting termessos in the process. Stay at Side, so that you can visit Perge and Aspendos on the way to or from lodging as well as Side ruins. I do recommend my trip report, "fumbling family....." on Fodors lounge

May 20. Cannot fly from Antalya to Konya unless you hire private plane or helicopter.

May 25. I doubt that you can find a day tour or survive one if you found it to Safranbolu and Amasra. About 5-6 hours each way !!!! Why don't you just read my trip report on the Western Black Sea even if it does not include Safranbolu.

May 27. You may be able to get a Pergamon day tour if Bora Jet schedule permits. It is the only airline that flies to korfez airport (turboprop). This tour may also include Assos if you are lucky.

You may consider taking a day tour to Iznik, Nicea if neither of the above is available. We have some photos of Iznik on Picasa under my wife's name, eser celebiler. also on webshots for other sites like kekova, myra, etc. but with the name written together, esercelebiler.

Finally try to buy John Freely's books on the areas you will be visiting. They are very detailed if somewhat dull reading.

    Dear otherchelebi:

Thanks much for your kind advice.
I am already restructuring completely my itinerary, following your suggestions and looking at big Turkey maps .

I did try to hire the helicopter to travel from Antalya to Konya, but only a private jet was available.
    That will suffice.

I read in another post that you too are traveling soon. I hope your neurologist give you the OK, and you have a nice trip.
    Sincerely,
    Adriana
