Help with the Fjords

We are a group of 8 flying into Oslo on 9 July at 9:00PM and leaving Oslo on 11 July at 6:30 pm. We would like very much to make a tripi to a Fjord but do not want to spend $400 per person as Norway in a nutshell suggests. We can rent a large van for $900 (plus petro) or about $140 per person. If we drove to Myrdal and then took the Flam and a boat cruise-- will we save money over taking a train from Oslo?

Thanks!
