We have about 3 weeks for our Pyrenees trip. We arrive in Girona , Spain in Mid May and will have a rental car. We enjoy scenery, historical architecture, churches and monastaries, cute little towns and musuems. We do not expect to do much treking in the mountains. I'm having trouble marking out a route (to Bilbao from Girona and return). Has anyone done a similiar trip? Any suggestions?
thanks, travelbug

Trip Ideas
travelbug:
We did a simlar trip a few years ago and loved it. We had already visited Cadaques, Figueres and Girona, coming down from the Dordogne, via Carcassone, Perpignan and Coillure. After a week in Barcelona, we set off for Andorra (overnight was enough), then headed into the Col (pass) country, follwing a good part of the Tour de France routes...we ended that phase in Pau, stayed a few nights and then headed for Biarritz and headquartered nearby in Bidart (Villa L'Arche...superb lodgings...still remains on our Top Ten list)). We drove the 90 autopiste miles from Bidart to Bilbao, spent the good part of a day at the Guggy.... then went on to Gernika (of Picasso's "Guernica") and followed a tip we had on visiting the astounding Bosque Pintado(see pics) before continuing on to San Seb for a few days...turned our car into Biarritz, caught the TGV to Paris (5 hrs). Great trip...springtime, not too crowded anywhere. About 26 days.
If you decide on this outline, I'd be happy to pour you some more reco-tips for each location. You'll be returning, so I would suggest a more southerly route, just in Spain, so as not to backtrack too much. That Spanish Pyrenee country is handsome.

Stu, thank you for the information and the tip/pictures of the painted forest. It's on my list now. Any other tips would be appreciated. I'll check the Tour d France routes. I have several books I'm using, but still am having trouble selecting a good route.
