Help with itinerary for a Weekend Castle adventure in Germany

My son would love to explore some castles to celebrate his 7th birthday (weekend of Nov 2nd). I'm thinking of the area around Munich or Frankfurt. Problem is, I only can get away for the weekend (flying from Helsinki). We would love to stay in a castle too! Can anyone help me with this itinerary? I was considering Ludwig's Castle and then Legoland but that might be too much. I'll rent a car so we can be on our own schedule. Any thoughts and ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I can't recommend a castle hotel, but there is a website that lists castle hotels, Euro-Connections, www.traveldata.cc. I found that information in my Frommers, by the way.

My favorite castle is Burg Eltz, which is in the Mosel Valley not far from Frankfurt. It is just beautiful, like a fairy tale castle. There are tours in English periodically, although we didn't want to wait, so we took a German tour.

If you're interested in seeing Burg Eltz, you might check out the reviews on Trip Advisor. There's information about parking that might be useful if you don't want to do the walk through the forest to get to the castle.

Try Burgenwelt Ehrenberg just outside of Reutte, Austria. It is a quiet guesthouse ( with an amazing playground) behind an old fortress. From the Gasthaus you can climb to two different castle ruins. Both castles have activities for kids. Reutte is a 15 min drive to Ludwigs castles. Our two girls loved our weekend there.

Thanks for your help. Looks like Cole has his heart set on Legoland which takes us West of Munich. Any suggestions for that trip?

For a weekend trip you and your son will love Ludwig's castles. Be sure to tour Hohenschwangau on the hill opposite Neuschwanstein for a castle that royal people actually live in. Have fun.

I'm doing research for a future trip to Germany and discovered Burg Katzenstein, which is a castle/hotel located northeast of Ulm, which I believe is not too far from Legoland. Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to stay there (can't do everything), but maybe it would work for you and your son.

Peace,

Gemut.com Gemutlichkeit Travel has provided info on castle hotels in the past. Go to their website to see what they have.
