Hi, I'm planning a trip to Italy (Venice, Amalfi Coast, Rome)in September and trying to estimate costs. We'll be travelling from Venice to Naples, and boyfriend wants to take night train. Looking on the Trenitalia website for costs of sleepers/couchettes, and I'm not sure of the english translations of some of the terms. Can anyone help me out?

1. 2- or 3-bed compartment
Posto has a wide variety of meanings, but I'm going to guess that a good one would be "berth" or "bunk" so...
2. Double berth
3. Special berth
4. Single berth
Thanks for the help! But then what would the difference be between a 2-bed compartment and a double berth? They seem to be different prices.
I don't know about in Italy but in the US there used to be berths that weren't in separate compartments - just a car with rows of berths. Remember Some Like it Hot?
I checked out raileurope.com
We are also going to Venice and traveling by train overnight to Naples (then onto Capri). On that site, it shows our price as $212. That is for a 1st class sleeper for 2 adults. Does this sound right to anyone else out there?
KY - The place to check actual rail fares is
www.trenitalia.it
Rail Europe charge a high rate of commission if you book through them.

Hi kelloo
www.volareweb.com will fly you Venice/Naples for about 40E each.
I can't get past the first selection on trenitalia website! Once I choose my train, I don't know how to get to calculate fare, etc.
By the way, what is the easiest way to get to Capri from Naples once we arrive at the train station?
Our return flight is also out of Rome, so we will have to go to Rome from Naples on our way out. How long will that take by train?
Thanks!
KY - For fares click on the red symbol on the right side next to the train you choose.
The page comes up in Italian only, but it's easy enough.
Click on the arrow under 'Tipi di Posti'
... and choose what you want e.g.
4 bed cuccette
2 bed compartment
etc.
.....
To get to Capri, catch a bus or take a taxi to MOLO BEVERELLO, from where there are regular ferries and hydrofoils.
Journey time Naples-Rome FCO Airport is just under 3 hours with a change at Roma Termini.
For timetables see Trenitalia.
Hope this helps ...
Steve
Thanks, Ira. I'd already checked the volare web site and saw that the prices would be the same as regular train fare, and quicker! Alas, boyfriend thinks it will be "cool" to sleep on the train. Oh well, we'll see how he feels about it once we get to Naples! I'm a heavy sleeper, but he probably won't sleep as well. We'll see.
Hi Kelloo,
Please pass the following along to boyfriend,
Hi,
I have spent the night on sleepers with loved ones. It ain't at all what you think.
Fly to Naples and spend the night in a hotel. It will be cheaper and a lot more fun.
