help with German Trains (Frankfurt to Rothenburg to Prague)
Hi people, am planning to visit Germany and Prague this April. I just want to ask which train would take me from Frankfurt to Rothenburg. I plan to stay in Rothenburg for 3 days. On the first day, I'd like a trip to Fussen. On the 2nd day a day trip to Lohr on the 3rd day we plan to just tour Rothenburg and go to Prague the following day. Is there a train that actually travels from Rothenburg to Prague or just a sleeper bus? Sorry for these questions-this is my first time in Europe.
I heard about the Bayern day pass but is it to expensive if this is my Itinerary?

I don't think that Rothenburg is the best base for day trips to Neuschwanstein and Lohr. The journey to Neuschwanstein takes about 5 1/4 hrs OW, with 4 to 5 train resp bus changes.
For Prague, you will have to go by 3 different local trains to Nuremberg, where you can catch a bus to Prague.

I sgree with neckervd.
While Rothenburg is well worth the visit, it is not easy to get in and out of by train. If I remember right, it takes at least two changes of trains from Frankfurt-Rothenburg..maybe a 3 hr trip.
Key here is how many days are you planning on spending in Europe?

Rothenburg and Neuschwanstein apparently are the only worthwhile Bavarian destinations in the eyes of far too many English-language guidebooks and travel articles! If you really like gobs of tourists and want to make an extraordinary effort and spend lots of Euros to reach these places, it is possible, but I would simply advise you to keep on your Frankfurt-Prague trajectory instead and to see some other great places instead.
One good option is the Romantic Road city of Würzburg. It's one hour from Frankfurt by direct train. The Residenz (Palace) and the Hofkirche next door are terrific. The Marienberg fortress is worth visiting too -

It's not officially a castle but surely worth seeing. (Note that Neuschwanstein is not really a castle either - just an ornate private residence/palace built in the late 19th century that was dressed up to look like a castle.)
You can get to Lohr by direct train in 40 minutes from Würzburg. And if you want to see a very cool old walled town without all the tourists, take a direct train 25 minutes to Iphofen. It's got a lot to see and is full of wineries and art as well:

Nuremberg is on the way to Prague. Very cool old town and castle and lots of other diversions too. You take the bus to Prague from there.

Train costs: It will cost you €30 on the IC train to Würzburg. You can use the Bayern ticket to travel to Lohr, Iphofen, and Nuremberg.
http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm
Use the DB website to pull up train schedules and a bus ticket to Prague:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
Find trains you can use with the Bayern ticket by checking "only local transport" at the DB page above when you do your search. (You will find out that it's an insanely long trip to Füssen.)

Do you have a map? Nurenberg is north of Munich and about a two hour train trip. Well worth the trip. You can do a day trip to Fussen from Munich. From Nuremburg go east to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and then to Frankfurt. Cochem has a very cool Castle as does Munich and Nuremburg. Go see Fussen but not anything to out of my way for since there are so many other great places to see in Germany such as the mountains and the natural beauty.
Oberammergau can be reached by train from Munich. A change of trains at Bahnhof Murnau which is a sweet village and you will love this village. Close to Linderhof, another palace of the mad king.

Please:
1) get a map of Germany so you have even some vague clue to locations and distances
2) look at the bahn.de web site -which lists every train in Germany. It will show you how long - and with how many changes - it will take between any two places. (It also shows the rest of europe, routes and times but not ticket prices)

For lots about German trains and which cities would be best to base in - Munich to me in your case for Fussen and also day trip to Rothenburg from it perhaps - direct buses to Prague and trains too though they take longer than the bus - any check out these informative sites: www.bahn.de/en which nytraveler lists and www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
If traveling several times on long-distance trains check out the German Railpass which I think now also lets you take any German train to Prague (the buses are also covered as they are run by the railways I think).
