Arriving FRA morning 21 Dec with three days to visit X-Mas markets before catching train from somewhere on 24 Dec for Paris. Was thinking about going from airport to Wurzburg for first night, seeing Residenz & Xmas Mkt, then the next day on to Rothenburg for the day but winding up in Bamberg for that night and the following. All local travel would be by train. Does this sound reasonable or like too much back & forth? Thanks for all thoughts.

Check out train schedules on the Bahn website, http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en. Be sure to spell Würzburg correctly. Wuerzburg is also correct, but Wurzburg is not and could get you to somewhere else. Also use "Rothenburg ob der Tauber Bahnhof", as there are a lot of bus stops in Rothenburg.
If you had more time I would suggest that you use regional trains and a €28 Bayern-Ticket for travel in Bavaria. A local RMV ticket for about €7 each will get you to Kahl am Main, the first stop in Bavaria. You would use the Bayern-Ticket on the same train (RE) from there to Würzburg. So €42 would get both of you from FRA to Würzburg, but a more expensive, faster ICE might be necessary to give you more time for your ambitious schedule in Würzburg the first day.
You could also use a Bayern-Ticket for Würzburg to Rothenburg, back to Würzburg, and then to Bamberg. It's all regional trains anyway.
I have no advice for you, but I do envy your trip. Bamberg and Würzburg are two of my favorite places. I like Rothenburg at night and in the morning, when there aren't so many tourists.
You don't want to be a day tripper to Rothenburg. It's best experienced in the morning or at night, after the tourists have left.

I would suggest:
21st - Train FRA to Bamberg
22nd - Train to Würzburg, visit Residence & Market, train to Rothenburg
23rd - Rothenburg
Enjoy your time in Germany. It's a wonderful country to visit.

Thanks for the advice. Now planning on going right from airport to Bamberg for all three nights and using that as a base. Maybe back-track & do a day trip from Bamberg to Wurzburg. A few questions:
1. Hotels: Any views on merits of Hotel Weireich vs Hotel Brudermuehle vs Gastehaus Steidle (need room for mom, dad and large teenager)?
2. Will check the bahn website, but if we wanted to folow "Larryincolorado's" advice ("local RMV ticket...will get you to Kahl am Main, the first stop in Bavaria. You would use the Bayern-Ticket on the same train (RE) from there to Würzburg"), would we have to get off the train in Kahl am Main and buy the Bayern ticket and then wait for next train, or could we get the Bayern ticket at FRA airport station?
3. Anyone know of a fitness center in Bamberg where one can pay a daily guest fee?
Thanks much.
2.) Buy the Bayern Ticket at the airport before you set out. Use the DB ticket machines - there's an English language interface - and you can use your credit card. Just stay on the train through Kahl.
