2 days each for Prague and Vienna and 1 1/2 days for Budapest isn't a lot. But when will you visit Hallstatt?

Although I haven't done it, I'd look into the shuttle bus option from Cesky Krumlov to Vienna. It can be expensive to rent a car in one country and drop it in another.

If you really want to rent a car, it might make more sense to pick it up in Prague and drop it in Brno, then train from there to Vienna. (I did it in the opposite direction a few years ago. I picked up my car at Brno airport, having taking a local bus from Brno train station to the airport, not a long bus ride.) But I wouldn't bother with renting a car at all unless you want to stop in between destinations to see other towns. There are some nice towns between Cesky Krumlov and Brno, but I'm not sure you have that much time to see them.

Sorry, but I must admit that I think your plan could be too fast-paced. Are you sure you can see and do everything you want on your "local sightseeing" days? Maybe you can -- it depends on your interests.

You seem to have a good idea of what you want to see/do in Prague but not so much in Vienna and Budapest. I'd take a dive into those two cities to see what you are interested in each one and decide where to budget the nights. Two or three nights in each? Personally, two nights in Vienna was enough for me, but it wouldn't be for some people.

You might skip the diversion to Cesky Krumlov which will take the good part of a day and just train directly to Vienna from Prague. Then no need to rent a car at all, no worry about a shuttle schedule.

Not sure what you mean about Salzburg? It's further out of the way between Prague and Budapest than Vienna is. Check out their positions on a map.

Your plan would be quick for you and spouse. It is likely to be too much for a 5 year old. Consider dialing back. Even kids who are "good travelers" rarely can do a pace like this.

I think either of those itineraries would work, if that's the kind of trip you want - just rushed. It's really up to you. I often travel at a fast pace myself. As long as you know the travel style of your family, I don't see any logistical problems.

I do think you'd want a car if you are interested in the lakes around Salzburg. If you have a car rental quote you are happy with, including extra fees for the drop in another country, then that's probably how I'd do it.
