Could anyone provide advice on the best way to use public transportation to get from Madrid to Segovia for a day trip? Also, any other advice on day trips in general would be appreciated. Thank you, Jim

Buses to Segovia leave from the La Sepulvedana bus station on the Paseo de la Florida (by the Hotel Florida Norte). The buses leave about every half hour and the trip is about 1:15; a little longer if there is traffic. There is train service, too, but I recall that it takes a little longer. We enjoyed our day trip to Segovia. Don't miss the back walk along the river at the base of the alcazar, and the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz.
Thank you, ms_go, that is very helpful. Do you recall any other day trips from Madrid that you enjoyed? Jim
Definitely Toledo. I've taken a daytrip from Madrid to Toledo twice, although I will say I found it very crowded both times (both Saturdays, once in June and once in October). The bus to Toledo takes about an hour and leaves from the Estacion Sur near the Mendez Alvaro metro stop.
El Escorial and Avila also are potential day trips, although I've never done the latter.
