Help please - Mosel's Alte Thorschenke or Haus Lipmann?

On the Mosel River for three days and nights, should we stay at Cochem's Alte Thorschenke or Beilstein's Haus Lipmann?
The raves for Lipmann on Fodors is clear, but the reviews of Cochem's Thorschenke are fairly old - at least 3 years. Has anyone stayed there recently?
I think we would like the livelier crowd at Cochem, but Haus Lipmann sounds wonderful based on the comments from Fodorites.
Any advice? Thanks so much.

Hey Barb - We spent two nights at HHL in May. I concur with the raves. Beilstein is very tiny. Cochem is a larger town, more to do and has a train station. Don't know about Alte Thorschenke but as I recall it was on my list to choose from, too.

So, will you have a car? Taxi to Cochem station from HHL was about 15 € (about an 8 minute drive), making travel from Beilstein a little inconvenient and expenses could add up. There is a bus but it did not run on a good schedule when we were there.

As an example, we hired Charley's Taxi to pick us up at HHL and take us to Burg Eltz (I'm sure you're headed there, right??) and wait for two hours and then return us to the train station. That cost 75 € which I really didn't mind as it was convenient for us.

Hope this helps. We enjoyed the Mosel area the best!

HHL is a great place to stay, but Beilstein is very small and there is not much in the way of shops. Cochem, however, was much busier with lots of shops and many more people wandering the streets when we were in May. We loved staying in Beilstein but we had a car and were able to go to Cochem and Burg Eltz during the day and return to Beilstein for our evening meal and a leisurely stroll thru the town. We also visited the Karmelitenkirche and Burg Metternich in Beilstein which were very interesting.

If you need a livlier environment, then you should stay in Cochem.

I too would love to hear recent comments on Alte Thorschenke. I was also looking at Lohspeicher in Cochem - we are travelling by train and decided that Cochem is best for us.

Thanks for the insights everyone! Aggiemom - yes, we will have a car. I am still hoping someone who stayed at Thorschenke will post a more current review. The postings in 2000-2003 were favorable, but is it as good as it was then? Vielen Dank!

p.s. Just found Alte Thorschenke reviews at Tripadvisor.com. They are very positive, so since Cochem has a bit more nightlife, we decided to stay at Alte. Thanks to all for the suggestions...

BarbaraJA, just saw your post.We stayed at the Alte just two weeks ago.

Great place...lots of character.

Our room was of typical European size and at the top of a tight spiral staircase on the 2nd floor. The floors were very creaky. The door opening into the room barely had enough head clearance (we're 5'10")with the top of the door cut at an angle to match the roof slope.. The floor itself was not level and the head of the bed must have been 3" below the foot. The painted furniture was stamped as being made in the 1920's. The bathroom was modern and very clean.

School kids from the street below woke us up about 7:30 (windows open), but it was time for us to get up anyway.

The restaurant is very nice and offered a feast of the typical German breakfast offerings.

As you are taking a car, pull right up in front of the entrance on what appears to be a sidewalk to register and unload your bags. We ended up parking in a multi-level garage 200 meters down the road with a "paid-for" sign from the hotel to put on the dash. The hotel charged $5 euros to park.

We really enjoyed the hotel as it was obviously different and provided a unique experience. Hope you find this helps confirm your decision.

James - do you know which "category" of room you had? They list 3 differerent categories of rooms on their website, A,B and C.

Barbara, When will you be there? We'll be staying with them at the end of september.

That's a good question for James, Sockboy; hope he replies! We will be there next May - I enjoy researching and planning our trips, so I start months ahead! So you will be there in September - have a great time, and be sure to post a report when you get back...I would like your opinion of Alte Thorschenke as well!

Sorry, but I don't recall the category--just the price. It appeared as $108 USD on the credit card statement. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you probably had a cat B room, same as I have booked - so your report is a good indication of what I should expect - thanks!

I will be sure to post a report on all the hotels on my trip this fall. We get back mid-october, so look for it at the end of october!

We last stayed at the Alte Thorschenke in 1997. Good to know it is still doing well. We enjoyed our stay there and will go again.
