Help plan trip - Sweden and Denmark in August
I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Gothenborg, Sweden, for myself, husband, and an almost 4 year old son, to pick up a new Volvo in August. I am thinking of driving to Copenhagen and spending time exploring the countryside in Denmark. I am tempted to play it by ear, but would like to at least map out a direction. The alternative itinerary would be Gothenborg to Bergen, Norway, to see the fjords, with a stop-over in Oslo. The attraction in Copenhagen is Tivoli and possibly LegoLand. Any ideas or suggestions?

With a 4 year old in tow I would definitely pick Copenhagen! Tivoli is wonderful, and there are many other attractions for children. Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson, is really quaint, and I think your son would enjoy some of the castles such as Helsinor and Fredericksborg.

You bet!
1) In the "Search the Forums" box, type in "Volvo" or "<b>Gothenburg</b>". You will find lots of relevant information here.
2) See my Gothenburg restaurant recommendations here: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...omment-2203528
3) My major piece of advice is not to pick up your car the same day you arrive from the U.S. Jet lag can make driving on unfamiliar roads and in an unfamiliar car quite hazardous, to say the least.
4) Consider taking the train to Bergen, instead of driving. The road from Oslo to Bergen is narrow in many places (sometimes very narrow & steep) and the experience can be "tense" if you get my point. The train trip allows you to soak up all of the magnificent scenery at your leisure.

Thank you, mnapoli and Orlando_Vic, for your advice. Orlando_Vic, thanks for the link, I did read it before posting. I just wanted more information to make a decision about the itinerary. I think we'll stay close to Gothenburg and go to Copenhagen.

OK, how about travel guide recommendations: Rick Steves' Scandinavia, Fodors' Essential Scandinavia, Lonely Planet Scandinavian Europe, or Frommer's Scandinavia? Anyone has any experience with these or other travel guides? Thank you!

Your son would love the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. There is a train from Copenhagen, and two busses run to the museum. The kids can even row in a Viking Ship built at the museum.
