Me & my wife intend to travel from Mumbai to Munich - Prague - Vienna & Salzburg.

We are in our late 40s & are interested in exploring each of these places - experience the local culture, historical sights, experience the city life & of course the natural beauty.

I have plans to spend 4 days each in Munich, Prague & Vienna and 3 days in Salzburg.

Please advise if this is good enough.

Since we are travelling to these places for the first time I need help & guidance as to what all we should cover, how do we commute & where to stay.

For stay we prefer Air B&B type accomodation. What I mean is that instead of staying in a hotel we will prefer to stay with a local family who are in the business of letting our a room in their homes. This will enable us ti intere act with the family & learn from them their way of life.

We would want the costs to be mid-budget.

Three days in Salzburg is probably one day too many if all you are going to do is see Salzburg. If you will have a car, I'd use it take a day trip to the Salzkammergut southeast of Salzburg--Halstatt and surrounding area. Beautiful scenery and very interesting.

I'd also recommend a day trip from each of the other cities given the amount of time you have. Where you would go depends on your interests. While you could of course spend more time in each, for a first visit, I think that three full days is plenty to see the cities.

E.g. Melk Abbey between Salzburg and Vienna, perhaps Eszterhaza palace in northern Hungary as a day trip from Vienna (if you're into classical music, it's where Joseph Haydn spent much of his career) and is fascinating to boot.

While I've never used AirB&B, I don't think it works like that: generally, my understanding is you rent the home or apartment but the owner and his or her family would not be there.

As to how to get around, my spouse and I rented a car for when we did a trip similar to this , but it was more an encumbrance than a help in Vienna and Prague, and we dropped it as soon as we got to Munich. However, there are so many charming places to see that a car would be very useful.

you could also look at ordinary Bed and Breakfast places which you can find through the local tourist boards - there are lots in Austria and you are more likely to meet people with whom you can interact.

I appreciate that you might not want to drive but instead of doing a day trip to Melk, you might consider renting a car as you leave Vienna and driving along the Wachau valley to Melk, and then driving via the Salzkammergut to Salzburg, staying a night at Hallstatt or St Wolfgang for example. That would enable you to see some of the wonderful scenery of the area before you go to Salzburg.

[in fact, given that all your other stays are in cities, i wonder if it might be preferable to stay in the Salzkammergut for that part of your trip and do a day trip to Salzburg by train - just a thought].

"...4 days each in Munich, Prague & Vienna and 3 days in Salzburg." Does this include the travel time between destinations? If so, you do not really have all the time you think. The Munich to Prague connection, for example, is about 5 hours; Prague to Vienna, about 4; and Vienna to Salzburg, 3. The time of year for your holiday may influence your itinerary, as well.

While this is an easy route to do with train travel, annhig makes the excellent point that in order to really enjoy the natural beauty, having a car would allow much greater flexibility for exploring Bavaria and the Salzkammergut.
