Help! Need to get from Milazzo to Catania airport...

Does anyone know the best way to get to Catania airport from the hydrofoil port in Milazzo? Apparently, there is one direct bus, but it leaves at 8:30 in the morning!! Does one have to bus from Milazzo to Messina, then get another bus to Catania? THANKS!!

I don't know about the buses, but we took the trains...and yes, you had to switch in Messina, but it was easy and quick. Is there a reason you want to take the buses instead of the trians? I would think that the train is quicker and there are many more options, not just a morning one.

Hi Susanna,

I was getting the impression from other Sicily travelers that the buses were more direct than the trains (maybe that's not correct). I'm more than happy to travel by train. Do you know how I can get a train schedule? From downtown Taormina to Milazzo's port, we are taking 2 buses.
Grazie,
Betty

Hi bettyo70:
I don't know where to find the Sicilian train schedual, but hopefully someone else does. We traveled from Palermo to Milazzo on the train, then went out to the islands. When we returned, we took the train to Taormina, it leaves you off down at the coast, it's just a short taxi ride up the hill to Taormina. Afterwards we had a car. My feeling was it was easy to travel by train around Palermo, Cefalu, Milazzo, Taormina, Catania. I don't believe the train runs in the center of Sicily and maybe not the bottom half of the island..not sure about the west coast. I know that it doesn't run to the ancient greek sights that are in the middle of nowhere, which may be where people are taking the busses to. It certainly runs to the above mentioned cities, and was just fine for traveling. Hope this helps.

Hi- i went from catania to the milazzo port last year (other direction) and we took a private car for appx. 150Euros. To have a car waiting without any anxiety about switching or getting lost- and to not have to lug our baggage from train to train was worth the extra money. We booked our car through Five-Star (I believe that's the company)- they have a website.

If you can't take the DIRECT bus from Milazzo to Catania Airport (which is by far the best solution), your next best solution is the following:

1. Bus from hydrofoil port in Milazzo to Messina bus station. Giuntabus service is frequent EXCEPT on Sundays

2. Train from Messina to Catania (the bus is too slow)

3. Airporter bus from Catania train station to Catania airport. Service is every 30 minutes.

You will have to walk three blocks from the Giuntabus bus station in Messina to the Messina train station.

The advantage of taking the bus in Milazzo is that it stops near the hydrofoil/ferry landing. By contrast, the train station in Milazzo is 3 kilometers away, requiring a taxi or local bus. A train would be logical if arriving from Palermo or Naples/Rome.
