Help! Moscow - Helsinki transportation

Jump to last reply

Hello. We need to get from Moscow to Helsinki to catch our 2:10pm flight for the USA.

We could take the Lev Tolstoy overnight train that either gets into Helsinki at 11:37am or 12pm (2 different times arrival times have been posted) or get off at Tikkurila. This may not allow enough time to get to airport on a Friday afternoon. Is it rare for this train to be late more than 20-30minutes?

Someone on TA mentioned that since I won't have a Schengen Visa (I'm from the USA) I would not be able to take this train anyway. Is this true? I will have my Russian Visa.

I can take a 17:10 Fin Air flight the day before my USA departure, but I hate to lose time in Moscow, especially since I will have already visited Helsinki.

Thank you for your help.

I cannot help you with how punctual the train is. I have not used the Tikkurila station. I am familiar with the Helsinki main train station, airport, bus, etc.

Assuming you did arrive on time at the main station at 12 noon, then you would need to make your way through the station and onto the bus or a taxi just outside to the airport.

The city bus 615 usually leaves about every 15 minutes and takes 35-45 minutes for 4Euros. So, if you made it to the side of the station and boarded a bus quickly at 12:15, you would arrive at HEL by 1:00pm, check in? check bags?, and go through security.

The FinnAir bus leaves from outside the train station every 20 minutes, advertises 30 minutes with one stop between train station and airport for 6,20€

Taxi from train station to HEL would be faster (still close to 30 minutes) and cost up to 40Euros.

Depending on the airline, you may be able to use a shared kiosk if you need to check in/check bags. I've only done this a few times and it seemed to go quickly. I also have gone through security line usually in 5-15 minutes. My friends tell me I have been lucky, that the security lines at HEL are known for being long and slow. I think it may be day/time and 2:10pm would probably be an off time.

That all said, I wouldn't want to be arriving at the main Helsinki train station at hopefully 12 noon for a 2:10pm flight (to AMS?).

If you find that the train is reliably on time and you want to do this, I suggest you look at getting off at Tikkurila station and taking a taxi for the 15-20 minute journey to the airport with the backup knowledge that if no taxis are at the station, bus 61 runs to the airport at least four times an hour.
