Help me plan day trips from Sorrento to Pompeii & Capri

We are splitting time between Sorrento & Positano. I prefer we do nothing in Positano other than lounge, take in the water, whatever the heart desires as the days before are packed with sight-seeing!

So...I need help planning day trips from Sorrento. It seems Pompeii is pretty easy by taking CircumVesuviana and hiring a guide once we arrive.

We'd like to do Capri the next day. I come across a company (http://www.cassiopea-positano.com) that does a full day tour brings you to the main highlights, places to swim, and gives you time to tour the Island by yourself. I'd like to know of what other companies people used and whether or not you recommend this approach as opposed to us touring by ourselves, renting a private boat etc.

So any further input, experiences, directions etc is appreciated

I visited Capri as a day trip from Sorrento on my own. You do not need a formal tour. Everything you would want to see is walkable or a short cab ride from the main pier.

There are numerous boats and hydrofoils from Sorrento to Capri. You find out the schedule and just get on one. (Be sure yo have the return times - they stop early in the evening.)

Then you are free to do whatever you want on Capri. Decide what interests you most - and ask if the Blue Grotto is open when you arrive in the Marina. (If it is you can get launches right from there.)

i understand i can ferry or hydrofil over to Capri, however, I want to do a boat tour. That is why I need companies recommended. Going in July time frame and fear if I don't book in advance I will be out of luck!

Your fear is unfounded. There are tour boats leaving the dock like every ten minutes. I don't think hardly anyone books in advance - certainly not before arriving on Capri.

Agree with the others regarding boat trips on Capri... no need to reserve in advance. Be sure to allow enough time to explore Sorrento as it is a fabulous city that Americans don't seem to talk about very much. Beautiful, charming, fun, lively, delicious food & limoncello everywhere!

You do not need to book in advance, though you can.

Here's a website showing the various operators that make the trip from Capri to Sorrento:

Capri is an island sticking up - way up - out of the sea. A boat tour of it would show you the shoreline and could pull in at the marina. Your boat could not enter the Blue Grotto - only rowboats are small enough to do that.

If you stay in the boat you cannot see the town of Capri, the town of Anacapri, explore the roman villa or see any of the other sights. You need a boat to get there - but once ther you have to ascend the very large hill to see/do anything.
