Hi,
I have visited Budapest, Pecs, Eger (and Egerszalok), Sopron, Szeged and Szentendre, but I don’t know Gyor & Esztergom. Is Esztergom generally among Hungary’s most beautiful towns or is it an ordinary town with the real reason to visit being its basilica? Also, is Gyor as attractive of a tourist destination as the places I have already been or is it more of a place to visit only if you are already in the area?

Hi,
First of all, talking about Esztergom. You heard it right, Basilica is one of the reason to visit Esztergom but not the only reason. It is one of the beautiful city in Hungry with the largest church Basilica. It is the city with the most fascinating and adorable architecture in the Hungry.
Now about Gyor! Well, it all depends on your interest. If you are having interest in History then it is the place to visit at least once. The place you may like here are- Museum of Roman Archaeology, Benedictine church, and Carmelite church.
Another reason to visit both cities is, you can reach by plane, train, bus, your own car and most importantly through Boat(from Budapest).
I hope this will help you to make your tour there. Have a nice trip.
