The website www.venere.com makes it easy (once again - - for a while, they stopped doing this) - - grouping Lake Garda together on http://www.venere.com/en/reservation...a/hotels/29017

Do pay attention to what they list and where it is (they list Brescia, for example - - that is hardly Lake Garda to me). Bel Sito, in Garda or Il Riccio in Gardone Riviera look good to me.

Oddly, they list only one hotel for Sirmione, when there are dozens - - many not really ON the lake.

Their listing for Lake Como - - http://www.venere.com/en/reservation...e/hotels/28981 - - is not nearly as useful; 8 of 12 IN Como, and none in Bellagio.

You're setting a tough budget constraint for Lake Como. Hope someone else has a suggestion for you.

Best wishes,

Rex

In Torno (about 20 minutes by boat from Como), the Hotel Flora (it has a Web site) is built out onto the lake and has lovely terraces. It's inexpensive, as I recall, but I did not feel comfortable there: all the other guests were German (I speak the language well, but I have personal reasons for not being very fond of Germans). I've never seen it mentioned in another post in this forum, but my impression was that the tourist population in the lake area is predominantly German.

But please bear in mind that the lower end of Lake Como is not the most picturesque (it's picturesque, but not the MOST picturesque).

I agree that there are a lot of German speaking vacationers; I noticed them a lot more around Garda than around Como. I'm sure I could not readily distinguish a German from a Swiss or Austrian vacationer.

Of course, the language spoken most by vacationers (I guess) is Italian - - and I certainly cannot distinguish local Italians, whether they live two miles away of ten from the thousands of other Italians who travel to the lakes.

It's a vacation destination; the majority of people there will be vacationers.

thanks for the recommendation.
to be more accurate, we look for a three stars hotel in desenzano, which is the southest point and the most comfortable one (in terms of accessibility to the main cities), so i'd appreciate if you reccomend me a hotel in that area.
we plan 5 days in garda lake and 3 in como lake- is that best? what's the best town to sleep in (again, from a practical point of view).
thank you!

We've spent quite some family holidays at hotel Miralago in Cernobbio, which is just outside Como. It's 500m away from Villa d'Este, on the lovely plaza in front of the fisher's port (the name of the hotel means Lake View). Now that I look it up it seems they got a website and prices have gone up a little, but it's still more or less your budget category. http://www.miralago.it

We also stayed at La Pergola in May. Very quiet, incredible view, and great food.I believe it was 100 euros a night.

i've checked in la pergola's site and it says 115 euros. i think i will choose miralago.
but before como, i have to find a hotel in desenzano or sirmione in max 100 euros. sirmione attracts me more and i prefer a hotel in the suburbs, far from the messy historical site and close to the main roads. please advise. thanks!

If you take Miralago, tell them you were sent with the best regards of the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dewaele from Belgium. It's been years for me since I've been there, but my parents have been there at least once every year for the last 15 years so they for sure know them... and who knows, it might get you a special treatment

Residence La Limonera in the middle of Bellagio. Studio apartment with kitchenette, air conditioning, satellite TV for 100 euros in early September.

thanks jean,
it looks amazing. but is bellagio the best place to stay if i want to explore como lake and magiore lake area? do i have to use a ferry to go aroound? i also undersood that it takes a while to reach bellagio due to the narrow roads. and finally, maybe you have a suggestion for a hotel in sirmione (where we can park close to the hotel)- i'm quite confused there...
thanks
simona

Others may have differing views, but I think trying to explore Lake Maggiore while staying/sleeping at Lake Como is not a good idea. I'm not even sure it's possible to drive back and forth in a single day and still have any time in the middle to see anything at Maggiore.

In your first post, you mentioned travelling for a week. (You also paired Garda and Como; now you're pairing Como/Maggiore/Sirmione.) Given only a week, I'd pick just two lakes. Only you can decide which two lakes offer the types of activities and sightseeing you prefer. Do some research in guidebooks.

The mid-lake area of Lake Como is probably the best place to stay to explore this lake. Whether you stay in Menaggio (west shore), Bellagio (middle) or Varenna (east shore) is a matter of personal choice, availability and budget. For myself, I'd choose, in order, Bellagio, Varenna, then Menaggio.

You can drive the twisty road directly to Bellagio or drive an easier road to Menaggio and take the car ferry across to Bellagio and/or Varenna.

The ferry is only about 15 minutes. It's rather inexpensive for pedestrians (a few euros in each direction). I don't know the charge for cars. Perhaps someone can tell us, please?

Seems like 5,30 or 6,90 one way for a car.
