Help from Janisj and Morgana
Hi I have been reading all the posts regarding York. Last night I had a room in York for 5 days in a B&B I found on this post. Today it fell through. I saw someone post about a St Raphael but no # or website. Can you help? Based on thinking I had a room, I sent a deposit to the hotel in Edinburgh first and then to York from May 14-19. Apparently there is a big horse race. Any help in getting a room within walking distance of train station for solo woman would be greatly appreciated. Morgana had many great ideas but can't find her direct email. Don't want to purchase train tickets until I am assured of a room. Many many thanks for all the help! Johanna
Many thanks. Johanna

Hi Johanna - Why don't you book something through the York Tourist Office website?

Sorry - I really can't help too much since it has been years since I used a B&B in York (usually self-cater for a week at a time)
But do contact the tourist office like steve_james recommends. BTW - don't obsess too much about being walking distance from the station. York is a small city and taking a cab to just about any B&B won't cost much. That will definitely increase your odds - and yes, race meetings do fill up a town for sure.

Hi Johanna
Now this might seem a strange suggestion but I am going to advise you to look at another travel forum! Follow this link -
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum...e_England.html
and you will find excellent advice from a 'York expert' called Ange. She is absolutely brilliant at this sort of query. You can email her direct, but if you just read some of the York forum posts I think it will give you loads of ideas.
I do live locally - which of course means I don't stay in the Hotels and B and B's.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the prompt replies. Steve, Thank you for the St Raphael info. I called then and spoke to Les. It sounds wonderful. They will be on holiday the days that
I will be there but gave me another contact. I will let you
know as soon as I know that I have a room. Thanks Morgana and Janisj! I am really getting excited about York. Everyone has been so nice on the phone. I now realize it is a small town and can take a taxi for 5 lbs from the train station. I will go to Trip Advisor and look up the Ange thread. Thanks so much. Just have to get my RR tickets but am a little concerned as someone on the posts said that the trains are not always reliable and want to go from York to the Eurostar the same day. Am not sure if I should return to London the night before and stay near the St Pancras station or can go directly from York on the 19th and take the Eurostar (if I leave 2-3 hrs)? Any more good advice? Thanks all!!!!Johanna
