The two pensiones that get the most play here are Nossek and Pertschy (sp?). We've stayed in the latter and liked it. Both are in the center. Nossek is directly on the Graben and Pertschy is down the street from Michel'splatz.

I can only assume that with the NY balls, etc. in Vienna, that this must be peak hotel season there, so you'd best get going asap to make your reservation and possibly expect higher than normal hotel rates. Perhaps others with experience at that time of the year can comment on that aspect of the search. Have a wonderful time.

We recently stayed at Pension Suzanne and it was very nice, good breakfast, helpful people and a very convenient location. It is one block from the opera house and pedestrian mall. Within walking distance of St Stephens and the palace.

Hi oz: Below are a few links, the first one is the Pension Pertschy, we stayed there a few years ago during Christmas and were very pleased, just request a room that opens up to the inner part of the building not to the street. Our first night was very noisy with street noise and we asked to be moved if possible, they put us in an inner room and it was fine. Very good breakfast, convenient location, would stay again.

This link is for Vacation RentalsBy Owner(vrbo) we have used them quite a few times in various cities in Europe and have been pleased. The particular apartment below is one that I had bookmarked for a future visit. If it isn't to your liking, VRBO does have other options.

Have never used this particular service but I had also bookmarked it for future reference.

Good luck in your search. Hope this helps a bit. We will be in Germany from 12.3-12.15 this year. We travel quite a bit and always rent apartments now, much prefer them to hotels unless we will only be in one spot for 1 night.

Enjoy your trip.

Hello Oz:

We too will be in Vienna after Christmas, but we have learned that hotel rates skyrocket over the New Year's eve/day period, so we are "getting out of Dodge" on the 29th. Can't help on your request, but good luck. Gradyghost

Hi again oz:

I just did a quick search for your dates at

www.bookings.at

OMG, the prices!! and you are so right, there are very few rooms available during that time frame. Will you have a rental car or are you using trains? If you have a car maybe an option would be to stay out of the city center, one year we didn't book ahead of time and there was a holiday we didn't know about so we did stay outside of town, drove to the nearest train station and rode the train in & back, not an ideal situation but it did work.

Good luck.
Susan

oz, I just went into

www.vacationvillas.net

on their homepage click on Austria then at the bottom of the page there are approximately 45 apartments in Vienna listed, when I put in your travel dates they listed 13 as available, you might find something there. Don't panic....yet.
Susan

We've used the above several times to book apartments and have always been pleased.

hi there,

thanks again for your help. Am still madly hunting have looked at all the sites suggested and even though they look like they are available when contacting owners all booked up. Hotels am looking at but soooooooooooo expensive and still not that many to choose. Big mistake heading here for new years i think. May be camping in the park.

cheers
