Heathrow to Oxford - Coach or Cab????

We will be arriving Heathrow at 7:00 AM on a Friday. I don't dare drive a rental car out of there [ what with that right hand drive traffic and all]. Instead I am looking to get to Oxford as quickly as possible by some kind of public transport to pick up a rental car there. Therefore, am seeking advice on the fastest way to get from Heathrow to Hertz at Oxford at that time of morning. Help and thanks.

It's really too far for a taxi. I can't imagine what the fare would be, given the fact that they also charge a supplement for luggage or even if one of the Black Cabs would take you. Oxford is 57 miles from London, although Heathrow is not in London. There are 3 different bus companies---Oxford Tube, Oxford City-Link and National Express that go frequently from Victoria Coach Station. I would think that, given all the university students, they probably have service from Heathrow as well. Failing that, you could take the tube or bus into London and then back out, but I think if you search for these on the Internet you might find something. My son was a student at Oxford, but he went via London, not directly to school. He did ride both the train and bus regularly for weekends in London and found both very convenient. We've taken the train from London Paddington. Hope this helps a bit, although do remember that when you arrive at Heathrow you will be way out of London and the driving will be on motorways which is easier than on the smaller roads where you need more concentration. Good luck and keep your right front bumper on the middle line!!
Hi again, Jon. The web site you want is called "Oxlink". There is bus service via Oxford Bus Co at 011-44-1865-785400. Alternatively, there is Airport Lynx Car which is a private shuttle van (for your party of us to 8 only) for 52 pounds if paid by Visa and 45 pounds if in cash. They will meet your flight, take you to the car, allow for flight delays, and take you directly to your destination in Oxford etc. An idiot's delight! Pricey, but how jet lagged do you get? How many people? Certainly sounds the fastest--I think they said 75-90 min. Might be the way to go. I'll be interested to hear what you decide.
Jon,
Check the website www.oxfordcity.co.uk.travel. You'll find various means of transport from Heathrow direct to Oxford.

Actually, if you intend to drive in Oxford, you should just rent a car at Heathrow. Heathrow is out in the direction of Oxford so you have only to follow signs onto the Motorway. The motorway is by far the easiest backwards driving. You'll get right on the motorway at Heathrow and be in Oxford in about 90 minutes. You really don't notice much difference with multilane traffic. You will have much more of a challenge in Oxford. Get yourself some practice on the way out there and save yourself the considerable effort of alternative transportation. Also, Hertz cars are usually cheaper if you prebook through their international desk. They are also often cheaper at the airport. I'm serious, rethink this, you will be better off all around.
