I'm planning on flying into Heathrow, then changing to the Gatwick airport for a flight to Crete. How complicated and expensive is this. One of my connections brings me into Gatwick at midnight, out of Heathrow at 11 am. Any advice?

sandi has given you a link to one thread (there have been many others) w/ the basic info. The transfer is easy as pie.
BUT what do you plan on doing in the middle of the night?? There are no services to speak of overnight in the airports. What I'd do is book a room at a hotel at/near LGW and then take the coach to LHR early the next morning.
At Gatwick airport an office will book you a room in Gatwick or in Ebury Street in the Victoria district of London, including the Thistle Grosvenor hotel, which stand on Victoria station. Or you can set Google to Ebury Street London Hotel. The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Rail Timetable, which shows that trains leave Gatwick at 0020, 0050 and 0155 and take 35 minutes to Victoria station. Then you can sleep in your Victoria hotel until 0800, breakfast, stroll in London, and take the District line tube train at 0900 15 minutes to Hammersmith, where you can cross the platform, with luggage, to the Piccadilly Line, 35 minutes to the airport.

As I understand it you're going into Heathrow and out of Gatwick. The bus (coach) between the 2 costs 17.50gbp/person. It's supposed to take 70 minutes but often takes longer due to traffic congestion. However it appears the last one is at 11:30 pm. More info here

Your options appear to be
stay overnight at a Heathrow hotel and take shuttle bus in morning to Gatwick
take Heathrow Express into London and stay in London and take Gatwick Express in the morning.
Take car service to Gatwick and stay near there.
Oops - I reversed your itinerary. My recco still stands tho' reversed. Stay at a LHR hotel and then take the coach to LGW in the morning.
Normally I'd say stay near Victoria but you are arriving so very late that it will be after 2 a.m. by the time you check in to a hotel. ASo just stay the night at LHR
(The other option - taking the coach upon arrival and staying at LGW would have the same problem - it would be between 0200 and 0300 before you got to the hotel)
