Having trouble using American Airlines web site

I spent quite a bit of time yesterday evening trying to find the frequent flyer miles required for European trips and was unsuccessful. Does anyone have navigation advice? I have a vague recollection of using their FF pages last summer without problems.
Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe, go to Aadvantage header link, click on Aadvantage member guide, click on using miles on airlines, and go to the particular airline. Scroll down to Destinations and you'll find all the mileage info you're looking for.

I haven't checked that recently, but I believe it still won't give you a lot of more specific information you can get by calling Aadvantage customer service. For example I talked with a representative to see where I could get extensions to. Instead of just flying into London and home from Madrid on a 90,000 free business class award, I discovered that I could actually fly to London, stay for a week or so, then they'd add on for free a BA business class ticket to Instanbul. With some destinations, depending upon other partner airlines, you could also add a flight from some other European city to your final departure point, with an extra layover there. So once you know your basics and how many miles you want to use, be sure to call and check things out so that you can get all the advantages you are entitled to. Don't think your award is only good for the basic flight over and back, which is what the website would seem to indicate.

Joe: In general, the miles required are 25,000 for US only, 35,000 for carribean and latin America, and 50,000 for US to Europe. It is really hard to find on their website, but there is a page that lists them, the key is something like AA50 for 50,000, AA35 for 35,000, etc.

Joe - I posted a reply to your question twice last night & for some reason neither has come up. Here goes again:

You can't check for available dates using FF awards for international flts., just domestic ones.

40,000 miles economy to Europe10/15-5/14
60,000 " " " " 5/15-10/14
90,000 " Business/First class

50,000 If you buy the lowest available tkt. and use 50,000 miles you get an upgrade.

I just read on another post that not all economy flights are upgradable for the 50,000FF miles award.

Four of us are flying this summer together on American from Miami to London and then BA to Amsterdam and returning from Paris (flying over together, flying back at two different times). We needed two 90,000 mile awards for free business class as we're staying for over 90 days and couldn't find any coach fare under about $1800. The other two are only staying two weeks and bought coach fares for just under $500 which they upgraded to business with 50,000 mile awards. Trying to coordinate four available seats on flights wasn't easy even though we did it 10 months ahead. But the representative told me that any published fare can be upgraded to business with the 50,000 mile award, unlike some airlines. The only thing you can't use is an additional discount coupon. Depending upon the route you can usually even get the extra 10% senior discount if applicable and still use the upgrade.
