Have You Stayed in S. Bavaria and Munich?... Seeking Lodging Reviews
I'm planning a summer tour of Southern Bavaria and Munich, and have used a couple travel guides to learn of the accommodations listed below.

Any reviews and overall impressions of these places would be greatly appreciated. Also, which of any two in one region is preferred? Any additional possibilities? Do note that I'm seeking budget to moderately priced lodging.

Days 1 - 3 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen:
Hotel Bergland
Gasthof Fraundorfer

As an alternative to staying in Garmisch, I'm considering the following, in Oberammergau:
Hotel Turmwirt
Gasthof Zur Rose

Days 4 and 5 in Munich:
Hotel-Pension Beck
Hotel-Pension Schmellergarten

Days 6 and 7 in Bad Reichenhall:
Pension Hubertus

As an alternative to Bad Reichenhall, in Ramsau (just west of Berchtesgaden):
Seehotel Gamsbock

Thanks in advance.

David, I have stayed in both Gasthofs--the Fraundorfer and Zur Rose--and find them to be the real thing. Not fancy, but oozing with Bavarian charm. I can argue both ways, but I do prefer the location in Ober. to see the area.

DavidD:

I also have stayed at the Frauendorfer! I had one of the rooms across from the main lodge. Charming!
Like Bob the Navigator said, oozes Bavarian Charm! Great place to get a Bavarian Meal. Great location to daytrip to Mittenwald, Seefeld and Innsbruck. Check out www.bavariaben.com for other recommendations! (and some mood music!)
JOHN

Folks,

First, a nod goes out to Bob and BMW. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

For your review, allow me to add a couple more accommodations to the mix:

Concerning days 1 through 3, I'm pondering the Alpenrose, located in Mittenwald.

Lastly, concerning days 6 and 7, I'm now also looking at Gasthof Zur Kugelmuhle, located in Marktschellenberg.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

DavidD:

Mittenwald is a beautiful little Bavarian town! I have only daytripped in and had a few pints in that town.
Garm/Part. is a much bigger town with more options for rooms, food, etc.
Staying on the Garmish side will give you easier access to the Castles, Mitttenwald is on the way to Innsbruck!
It is the quitessential(sp?) Bavarian villiage!
JOHN
David -

In Mittenwald, we stayed at the Bichlerhof, which is the annex of the Gasthof Alpenrose. The Alpenrose is located in the town center near the church - although we didn't stay there, we had many good meals in their restaurant.

I don't know if the Alpenrose is similar to the Bichlerhof or not, but our room at the Bichlerhof was basic at best - it was absolutely tiny and had a really bizarre shower arrangement, but it was quite comfortable. The staff was incredibly friendly and the longer we stayed the more we liked it.

Hi,

I just returned from a week in Munich and Salzburg.

Based on feedback I received from this website, I stayed at the Platzl in Munich. It was less than a 5 minute walk from Marienplatz (train station), 1 block away from the Hofbrauhaus and the Viktualien Market and hundreds of shops.

Breakfast was included and VERY good.

The room was very quaint and had a great view of the city street. The staff was very helpful arranging for tours and giving advice & they spoke English very well.

The price was 156.00 euros/night +16% VAT.

In Berchtesgaden, we have used the Gasthof Sonneck which is located halfway up the Kelstein in the Obersalzberg area. It is an excellent restaurant and the owner, Hermann Fischer, has 3 rooms above the restaurant which he rents out. The price is usually around $45 American dollars per nite per room. The rooms have a private bath and shower. It includes a huge breakfast. A bonus is that in the summer, when it's hot in town. it will be cooler up on the mountain. We have stayed at the Kuglemuhle as well. This is a larger gasthof connected to a big restauarnt at the entrance to a famous hiking trail in the area. We enjoyed this spot as well, but we particularly enjoy being up on the mountain.
