Have you eaten Rome's very best pizza?

Looking at Google maps, it looks like Panattoni might have changed names to Pizzeria Ai Marmi Srl though I see there are many references to either name on the web.

Not a reastaurant, but a fabulous place for a slice to walk around with (and other bread/baked goods):

Always hot, ironing-board size pizzas -- have the counter man whack off a piece and slap it onto a piece of wax paper.

I've been going to Da Baffetto for around 25 years and while it's great, I think Pizzeria Remo in Testaccio is better. The crust is extremely thin, with just the right amount of crispy, burned edges. All the toppings are extremely fresh and delicious but my favorite is the proscuitto and funghi.

I popped these locations (including your two suggestions kayd and Grinisa) into a google map. I believe I have the right locations--some are trickier to find than others.

Yes, we ate at Da Baffetto twice on our recent trip to Rome. We were in Rome for 7 days and ate at Da Baffetto on the first day. We then went back on our last day in Rome for more of their great pizza. We are still talking about it.

I prefer Pizzeria Pasquino (in Piazza Pasquino, of course). Made on the spot, pipping hot, very crusty, slightly burned = perfect.

Try the Capricciosa (capricious) with mozzarella, mushrooms, artichokes, tomato, half hard-boil egg, cooked ham, olives, oil. Each slice is different!

We have eaten at Baffetto twice and we like it a lot.

A second for Pizzaria Remo. Take the Metro to Piramide, walk west on via Marmorata (sp?) a few blocks, turn left and ask anyone for directions. Its a local institution. Lots of tables outside, too.

I think I tried Pizza Re 3 years ago.

One place I found near Piazza Barberini was upstairs.

Cheese just melted in your mouth and the ham was nicely chopped into a stringy form. All topping top-notch.

Can't remember the name though. You go up the stairs in a building a couple of doors north of the Easy Internet Cafe.

The only one of those I've eaten at is Da Baffetto. While it is a lot of fun (being kept at the door and then seated with strangers is part of the fun), I honestly wasn't blown away by the pizza -- maybe because one of ours was burned, and the other was rather bland and devoid of any spices.

My favorite is just about a block or so away calle La Montecarlo. The crusts are paper thin and always perfectly cooked. I really love this place. The waiters are a lot of fun.

I agree with Neopatrick. I found DaBaffetto very disappointing especially after a very long wait for the pizza. I think you can do better at many other places.

I also agree with Sally and NeoPatrick. DB was good, and we had a great table where we could watch the guys work (I actually have the exact same photograph as the one in the article--well, almost), but I frankly wasn't astounded at the pizza. I'm going to try Dar Poeta when I'm in Rome next week, since my hostel is in Trastevere. Any thoughts?

We ended up at DB, almost by accident. I didn't know it was Rome's "best" pizza. For two nights in a row, we saw lots of people lined up for it. On the third night, we had decided on pizza, and figured it must be good, due to the lines.We made a point to get there early and beat the line.

I have to say the most enjoyable part about it was sharing a table with a couple from Germany. We spoke very little German, and they spoke very little English, but we managed to "converse" and enjoy our time together. Very cool!

We had 2 TERRIBLE pizzas and awful servcie at Dar Poeta and wonder about all the hype. The best pizza we had in Rome was at Popi-Popi in Trastevere.

Acchiappafantasmi was recommended to us by our favorite chef who is previously from Capri. We loved it so much that we went twice. I'm not normally a fan of sausage but I the njuda pizza was out of this world!

Our favorite pizza in Rome is hands down - Da Michele Pizza. Via dell'Umilta 31. Few blocks from the Trevi Fountain. Amazing! It is actually kosher, but every time we went, the place was packed with nuns for some reason. They use potatoes sliced very thin on top and lots of roasted veggies. Really unusual and we all loved it!

When I was in Rome we found La Montecarlo. Vicolo Savelli 12. It was listed in another guidebook and we accidently found it. It's in an alley and open 12-3 and then in the evening again. We got there before 3 and he let us in. People tried to come in afterwards and he refused. He tells you where to sit aat a table with butcher paper on it. Served about the best pizza I've had in europe in years.

It's cheese on toast really.

Note that pizza is an evening meal for the Italians. Pizza places that cater to locals may be closed during lunch time.

I loved "Zio Ciro- La Madalena". There were a few around Rome, but the 1 my brother & I ate at was by the Pantheon in Piazza la Madalena. They have tons of pizzas to choose from, but you must try the simple & famous Margherita. there was a cool gelato/candy shop down the street, too (something called "Las Palmas" i think). I LOVE Acchiapafantasmi for their Spaghetti Carbonara, but unfortunately never tried the pizza. the beautiful trattoria-style restaurant had great food & service- a hidden jewel!

I live in Rome and never go to Baffetto or Montecarlo, too touristy and hectic for my taste and the quality (or hygiene) are not what it should be. If you want to sit with the locals, try La Berninetta - Via Pietro Cavallini (near Piazza Cavour) http://www.restaurantsrome.com/laberninetta/locale.htm or http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9500E1DB1338F93AA15757C0A962948260&sec=travel&spon=&pagewanted=all. Have a pizza (Roman style, so very thin crust, Neaopolitan pizza is the one with the thick crust) and a "fritto misto" (little pieces of zucchine, aubergine, artichoke and mushrooms, in dough and fried, delicious !).

Behind the Jewish Temple which is across from the bridge to Travestere
are a few small places which sell it by the piece. Also there is a shop with fried tiny artichokes

Has any one thus far mentioned Lo Zozzone for pizza bianca?

On via del Teatro Pace, 32. No tables. You get it to go, and eat it in the Piazza Navona, steps away. Open 23 hours a day. 5 euros pays for a meal.

ps: just so you're not surprised if you don't speak italian, pizza bianca has no tomato sauce.
