Hello: we are will be staying near the Vavin Metro station and need to get to the Gare St. Lazare to catch the train to Caen. Do we transfer to Haussman - St Lazare? Not sure which is the correct one to catch the RER.

What do you mean, which is the correct one to catch the RER? I thought you were catching a train to Caen. In any case, you'd go to the train station (Gare St Lazare) whichever stop you came out at, whether the metro or RER. Hausmann St Lazare is the name of the RER stop, St Lazare is the name of the metro stop. The RER has lots of exits, one in the train station, as does the metro. I'd take the metro myself given you are starting at Vavin, you don't have a lot of other choice except walking within Chatelet les Halles a lot. Don't see the point of that.
