I am planning a trip with my husband and two boys (ages 10 and 5) to Europe in October. We've never been there.
We will be arriving in Sweden to pick up our new Volvo, then crossing over to Kiel, Germany on the ferry and driving to the Netherlands. We at first thought to stay in Amsterdam but decided it would be too difficult with the kids and car. Not too many nice hotels at an affordable rate that can comfortably accomodate four. Plus the parking seems outrageous! I happened upon the Landgoed Avegoor on one of the thousands of websites I've searched and it looks great. Has anyone stayed there? There are no reviews anywhere!
Also, has anyone visited the park Hogue Veluwe?
And .... how far by train from Arnhem to Amsterdam and how much does that cost? We would like to make Amsterdam a day trip.
Has anyone stayed at the Landgoed Avegoor in Arnhem?

I've been to Arnhem, but it was day tripping from Amsterdam, so I can't help you with info on the Landgoed Avegoor Hotel.
Have you considered Delft for a base while in the Netherlands? It is a lovely little town, easily accessible to den Hague, Rotterdam, Kinderdijk, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Gouda and Utrecht. We stayed in Delft last year at a lovely little hotel right in the center of town, behind the Nieuwe Kerk, and they had a small car park available. Rooms were 82.50 Euro for double (E72.50 for single) - price includes breakfast. Perhaps they can accomodate the 4 of you - there was a family reunion taking place when we were there occupying many of the 12 rooms available. They have a bakery on site, which was just delicious for afternoon (and evening) snacks. They also have free (but wobbly) bike rentals available. The hotel is the Herberg de Emauspoort, Vrouwenregt 10-11.

In March of 2001 we were heading to the Hogue Veluwe, but the weather became too raw to consider biking around (we were travelling by train), so we ended up exploring Arnhem. If you do stay in Arnhem, may I recommend a trip up the tower of the Grote of Eusebiuskerk (no steps, they have an elevator) for a nice view of the river valley, including Germany.
Train travel from Arnhem to Amsterdam would take 1:08 - 1:14, depending whether you change in Utrecht (worth stopping for a visit - DomKerk, DomToren, Natl Museum van Speelklok tot Pierement). You can find train schedules and prices at the following website:

If you have any other questions, just post. Peace.

Thanks so much! You have been so helpful!
I will check out the websites you posted. And will look into Delft as well.
