Has Anyone Been to Sitges, Spain Recently?
#5
Sitges is indeed gay-friendly, however it's also family-friendly, affordable, has lots of very nice architecture, and is half an hour or so from central Barcelona. Hot in summer, but then so's Barcelona. We like it a lot. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

AHHH, you guys are making me weepy quoting Seinfeld. I loved that show. Not that there's anything wrong with that! Thanks for the great info, as always.
But wait... What about hotel recommendations? I've been looking at Hotel Estella Barcelona. Has anyone stayed there recently?

No, but it sure looks cool - we were planning a night there in May but the timing didn't work out.
I don't think it's in "central" Sitges (old town, beachfront restaurants, etc.) but instead a km or so east, closer to the port and the Melia complex. Probably walkable, though. We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria (2 stars or so) on the beach - not fancy, quite affordable, good family-run restaurant, great breakfast.
If you stay there, do a report, okay?

Thanks, Gardyloo. (By the way, great screename.) Pretty sure we're going-- if I can get the hotel to answer back this early. Would love other recommendations, too, for restaurants, etc. Also how far is Sitges from Barcelona Airport?
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

I think lauralamb meant "train from Barcelona Airport". I forget the name but you change at the 1st stop coming from the airport (5 minutes), a small station with 2 or 3 platforms. Then Sitges is about 20 minutes.

Regarding hotels, I have stayed at Calipolis (the most expensive), Plaja d'Oro (sp?) and lastly Subur 2 years ago. Like Santa Maria, all above are facing the beach so very convenient. All good hotels but I found 2-star Subur the best deal if you are not looking for 4-star comfort (which Calipolis was). In September, I booked on their site a single for 57 EUR p/night buffet bfst included. And the simple single room they gave me was on the 5th floor with a side view of the beach 15 meters away.

The hotel outside of central Sitges sounds like a good idea.
When I was there in October '99 I was right downtown. Out my window I could hear a round-robin of Cher's "Believe" the extended disco remix and Enrique Iglesias' "Be with You" the extended disco remix until 4:00am.
Those Spaniards party late.
