Harrogate, England--April '99
We're going to an international nursing conference in Harrogate next spring (two of us, no kids). Does anyone know about good lodging, dining near the convention center? Also, how do you get there via public transit from Manchester airport?

I was through Harrogate last year. I can suggest the Old Swan Coach House for lodging quite near the convention center. There are also dozens of low price B&Bs on Franklin Road about 2 blocks from the convention center. The accommodations would be cheaper here but lower quality too. Can't really recall any specific places to eat, but there are many and you can ask locally which to try. Generally, Thai and Indian restaurants are excellent all over England. As far as transportation, I drove, but there is a train station with direct trains to Leeds. The train from Manchester passes through Leeds to York so you would probably need to transfer. Train is probably your best bet. Be sure to visit York.

I checked the train schedule and found that you can catch a train at the Manchester Airport train station. Many trains and most take you to downtown Manchester where you transfer to another train that goes to Leeds and you transfer again. I have used trains in England many times and believe this will be the best for you. Don't worry about the transfers as everything will be clearly shown. Have a good trip.

I just returned from visiting my sister who lives in Harrogate..You will enjoy it!
It is the flwer capitol of Yorshire and has many interesting sights. Be sure to walk the public gardens, and have tea or lunch at the famous Betty's
Restaurant.
They have naturally occuring sulfher springs in Harrogate, so there are the famous Turkish baths there(in woderful old buildings queen Victoria would have loved).A massage, or treatment is well worth it.
Don't miss York. The church(minster) is as good as westminter abbey. The city is enclsed by a wall built by the Romans.. The train station is in the center of town. The Swan hotel was beautiful. Agatha Christie wrote there.
Have a great time.
