Hallstatt + The Lakes in 1 day or 2

Hi All

Hubby and I are heading to Salzburg in early Oct and I'm trying to decide on whether it's achievable to visit Hallstatt and the lake (Wolfgansee) area in 1 day or should we spend 1 day in Hallstatt and 1 day in the Lake area.

We will be using public transport. We're not interesting hiking, as we'd rather "stroll" around enjoying the scenery and perhaps go on the cog train or cable car in the lake area.

Thanks in advance.

Rellie.

I would definitely spend the two days in St Gilgen, can highly recommend the Park Hotel Billroth.

Others will hopefully contribute the feasibility of your plans via public transport. I can only add that it may be important to have backup plans in the event of inclement weather. We have visited the area four times now in late September (with our personal vehicle), and only once have we had anything close to postcard-perfect weather. Hallstatt and the Lake District shrouded in clouds and rain can be downright miserable.

We've been to Berchtesgaden and Salzburg a number of times in October and had very nice fall weather all 4 times, similar to fall in the NYC area. It's been a while though. For us, we spent an entire day on the Wolfgangsee, visitng the towns and villages. Hallstatt, we spent less than an afternoon there. Pretty, but if you're not visitng the "attractions", it's very tiny.

Thanks for the feedback.

I think a 1/2 day in Hallstatt will be sufficient, but we will dedicate a full day to the Wolfgangsee area.
