Hallstatt is 2:15 to 2:38 hours by train from Salzburg. That is too far for me to do a daytrip but it might be fine for you. I definately wouldn't add any other city into the mix if doing it by train as you already have 5 hours on train and then have to take a short boatride to Hallstatt.
I don't know about taking a car to do the 3 cities.
It would b a long day trip just to Hallstatt. I do not think it would be possible to add another town especially by public transportation. I would just go to Hallstatt for the day. The boat ride is only 5-10 minutes. Be sure to note the last boat departure to the train. (about 5:30-6:00 PM) I love Hallstatt, so personally I would do this if I could not spend the night.
Hi,
Driving from Salzburg to Hallstatt takes about 1:30.
hi shrf,
for reasons we couldnt'fathom, both train and buses in the Salzkammergut take a long time to get between places that are relatively close by car.
so if you hired a car, you probably could "do" all three in a day, though not thoroughly.
otherwise, just stick to Hallstatt.
It is quite doable with car. St. Gilgen is really on the way. You can be in Hallstatt by 10:00, stay until after lunch, and see St. Gilgen on the way home. Personally, I would stay in St. Gilgen and day trip both directions. There is a bus from St. Gilgen to near the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg.
I completely agree with bobthenavigator.
thanks everyone. so i think the best option is rent a car. so is hallstatt directly accessible by car or we should get off at a particular place and take boat ride? thank you
No, you can drive to Hallstatt. There is a parking lot. And just walk-very small village. Even though I love approaching Hallstatt by boat. But if you have time, you can take a boat ride and get a photo perfect view. If you have a car, no problem seeing St. Gilgen too. Public transportation is slow to these destinations.
thank u.
hi shrf,
I visited my friend google and found this tread on virtual tourist - "everything you ever wanted to know about Hallstatt but were afraid to ask!"
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Austria/Bundesland_Oberoesterreich/Hallstatt-329225/Transportation-Hallstatt-BR-1.html
as well as the ferry across there are also pleasure boats round the lake - here's the website which shows you all the options:

hope this helps!
You can also rent an electric boat for a half hour or hour and toodle around the lake yourself. Great vantage point for taking photos.
