Guided tours vs audio tapes

We will be in Venice for 2 nights, then Florence for 2 nights and then Rome for 5 nights. Since we really only have 1 full day in Venice and Florence is it worth hiring a guide? We have never been to Italy before but have some good travel guides and of course, smart phones, iPads, etc. When in Rome, I would like to hire a guide for the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's but my husband thinks we should just do the audio tour. I have checked out Walks of Italy ($$$ - there will be 5 of us) and also the Vatican's website. The only thing available via that was the after hours tour. Any advice?
