Christina, you said you had a wonderful guide for Nowa Huta. Do you recall how you found him?

Has anyone else a recommendation for a guide for Nowa Huta or for WWII or the Cold War time?

yes, I wish I knew his name but I don't, but the company was Cracow Tours. I had booked a group tour but I was the only one who showed up, so I got a private tour. There are some companies doing it who do the gimmick with old Communist cars, etc (and I heard they use vulgar language, which may not be for everyone, you know how a lot of people use the f word casually now). I wasn't at all interested in riding around in an old car, I wanted a walking tour that was serious.

It does sound just like that pne as we did stop for a break in an old SOcialist cafe, unless they all copy the same itinerary. And it promises a local guide. They did not pick me up at my hotel (which was Pod Roza), I had to meet the guide at a hotel near the tram stop that goes there, which wasn't far from my hotel, I didn't mind.

Part of that link mentions the possiblity of the tram transportation tour, so that one sounds similar. The photos etc are the cartoon thing and they mention a "crazy guide" so maybe it is that company. There is a company by that name but I thought they only used cars.

This one is free, sounds like they all do have a similar itinerary.

We used Crazy Guides and had a great time. They picked us up in old Soviet-era Trabant's and drove us out to Nowa Huta. We had lunch in a milk bar and also visited a 1970's apartment. The guides were young and fun, but also very knowledgable about the time period with first hand accounts of their own or parents/grandparents, etc. It was a good mix of history for those in our group who were into the political/economic climate of the time, and funny anecdotes for the younger ones.

We went with Crazy Guides too and our guide was fantastic. Would absolutely book them again.

Most of Nowa Hutna is post-war -a prime example of socialist urban planning that arose so quickly that there is a local saying:

"Rome wasn't built in a day but Nowa Hutna was"

oh well nothing useful to add but always think of this.

We went on our own about 10 years ago. Having a guide would have been useful, no doubt. It took some time to get there on the tram and bus but it was interesting if you like Cold War stuff.

Did one with them, much fun.

Make sure they take you to the Arka Pana - many Nowa Huta tours brush over that. It's the best church you'll see in Poland - google it to learn why.
