Do you know of any guide books for Macedonia (the former Yugoslavian republic)? I have tried several bookstores with no success. Have you traveled there recently? How relevant and worthwhile is the book(s) you know of? I would appreciate any information and comments.

My First Trip to Provence and Paris...Loved!!!

Brian,
Lonely Planet's Eastern Europe on a Shoestring has just 15 pages devoted to Macedonia. That's the only one I know covering. I suppose you have checked under its official name - FYROM - as well in the bookshops?
I spent 2 days in Skopje (stayed at the local youth hostel) approx. 10 years ago. Everything must have seriously changed by now. Can you read French or German books (some might exist in these 2 languages...).
Thierry Kumps
Thierry is right Brian. Other than the few pages in the Lonely Planet Eastern Europe Guide there are a similar number of pages in Let's Go Guide to Eastern Europe. I haven't found anything else and I've looked HARD. I was in Macedonia for 5 days last July [Skopje & Ohird] and am returning for 12 days on May 26 [leaving the US on the 19th. I will be happy to share what I know about Macedonia if you email me privately. Thee are some good websites. You might start with www.soros.org.mk. I can send you my list if you email me privately. Macedonia is beautiful, but economically depressed and not quite ready for prime-time. Most visitors are either visiting family or friends [as I am] or backpackers. My friends told me that the campground in Skopje is NOT safe. I did visit the Grand Hotel, which looked close to American hotel standards. The developing conflict in Kosovo is close and very troubling, but at the moment Macedonia is "maintaining the integrity of their borders." [from a Macedonian news service on the web.] The major problems are on the Serbian/Albanian border at the moment. I will be happy to share what I know. Feel free to email k?
