We plan to be in Austria very early May, and would like to drive the Grossglockner road. Is it likely to be open then, and drivable without snow chains? Or should we re-organise our itinerary so that we're there late May, early June?
Can we assume that whenever it's open, snow chains are not required?
Grossglockner road ... when?

You're right that whenever it's open, snow chains are NOT required.
Unfortunately they will only open mid to late May, depending on the snow situation. But it would have to be a very mild winter with very little snow to open in early May.
Hi,
If you want to better your chances of driving the Grossglockner, re-organise for late May/early June. The website reads that they open the road at the beginning of May, but lets face it, that depends on weather. My opinion, the later you can do your trip, the better. Once the road is open, you will not need chains.

Thank you both, that's helped a lot.
